You know as a native texas, I love my state and consider it probably the 2nd best state in the country overall, but I had to vote for cali as the 1st, I don't care 2nd aint bad, hell at worst 4th or 5th aint bad considering that theres 50 states. I'll take 2nd and give cali 1st. Although I never see myself leaving texas and moving to cali, cost's to much for the slight improvements on scenery, cities ect over what I already have in texas.

Here are a few more attractive photos of Los Angeles but this thread is about Texas versus California not Houston versus LA.

yea but it would be hard to talk about texas vs cali without Hou vs LA, while at it we should do San Fran vs Austin, Dal vs San diego, ect ect. In every case I would have to pick cali though lol. Although I do think that Hou is a prettier CITY than LA, while LA is overall a much prettier metro and area.

As a Californian, I admire Texas' economy at this point in our history. I love the fact that despite the amount of economic destitution that is spreading around the United States, Texas has been able to at least provide a glibber of hope in the American dream. We always need someone to help the rest of us see the light at the end of the tunnel, and right now, Texas is the one illuminating the end.

However, I will say that it's also not good that the state that has 12% of the nation's population and 13% of American GDP is caught up in such a tailspin. I think the worst thing to do is divide ourselves and wish destruction on another state because of some political differences. From reading this thread, there really are some people in BOTH states that need to realize that at the end of the day, we are all Americans. I don't like how some Californians are so arrogant that they don't think there's a world outside of our state borders, but at the same time I don't appreciate the fact that some Texans/New Yorkers/etc etc. are actively WISHING for California to fail. How constructive is that?

And comparisons to the 3rd world? Seriously? That shows how well traveled some people are on the City-vs-City forum. No one ever accuses France or UK to be 3rd world, despite having even HIGHER unemployment and having places like the banlieues around Paris or South London (Croydon, Brixton, etc.). Get a grip!

I just thought about sumthing, other than scenery, or charm and fame, "Im from california so that makes me cool", whats better about california? Im not saying texas is better either, but there just different, truthfully there is no answer to which one is better, its which one is better FOR YOU! Its funny to me as a college student in texas meating lots of people from everywhere people from Cali are always incredibly fast to talk about how much better california is, and how houston is the country, how much better people dress, speak, even dance, ect ect. Is all of this true? I mean I have been to cali a bunch of times, love the state but I just dont see any difference hardly except for better scenery in its cities, and more people.

You know honestly this thread does exemplify the problems in American society. this is exactly why the world thinks Americans are dumb, because we're always so busy pointing fingers at each other.

Last like I don't even know how many pages have had people, lowest of the low taking shots at places they don't live in. Its one thing to prefer a place but its another to go through obsessively trying to destroy the image of a place and that goes for both Californians and Texans and in this case New Yorkers too.
Honestly people on here disgust me a lot, I normally just stick to posting numbers and whatnot now, its really not worth it when some retard says "this place is a dump" without realizing millions of innocent people call it home.
I look down on people who really do exhilarate their time bashing a place based off what they see, hear, or think without ever having even lived where they bash. That's just very sad that people in our American society do that. And another thing how some of you posters here take so much more state pride than national pride, it disturbs me so much when I read posts on this site. Regional differences exist but you're creating barriers and divisions on your own.

Haha, and about the Texas economy:
As already explained, yes Texas has a budget deficit too, its not all peaches and cream and yes it was affected by the Recession to even thought most would say "What Recession?". But so does California (the highest in the nation), why am I continuously seeing these attempts from people to stoop down to troll level to bash places for all this? (I'm talking about both sides)
The only three states without a budget Deficit are North Dakota, Alaska, & Nebraska.

Yeah last month Texas lost some jobs. Especially with the ban on the rigs still in place, manufacturing all across the country taking a hit, and other scenarios. You probably can blame it, but job losses in Texas are only temporary, and its the only state that can actually afford to lose jobs especially since the year 2000 it created 79% of America's total job network. But the cities in Texas still managed to get more jobs, the main cities at least. The unemployment rate dropped. (For all the major cities minus El Paso, McAllen, Lubbock, Amarillo) There are areas of Texas in the Valley and near El Paso where job loses are incredibly high that are hurting the state.

Texas's unemployment rate is below national average, and job growth will continue, especially in November when the rigs are finally lifted, and it can finally go through again.

I think you present a very balance argument & your credibility is strong as a result. Too often the discussions on C-D deteriorate into mindless put-downs that are irrelevant and only reveal childish insecurities. Having said that, it is easy to be a California booster and understandable how smugness is common. The utter beauty of California is undeniable and can, at times, overshadow the unpleasant realities of over-crowding, limited resources [particularly water], environmental problems [worse air pollution of any state], high cost of living, economic concerns and a mindset that tends to view the world thru a more socialistic prism. I would be lying if I didn't admit to being a socialist who has major issues with run-away irresponsible capitalism and why I view Texas' political situation unfavorably. But I am enough of a realist to know that our system in America is capitalist so finding the right balance can be difficult at times. When the economy is good, California tends to legislate very strict anti-business measures. But that can be harmful when the economy is weak and there is limited money for social programs.

At risk for sounding patronizing, I do think that Texas will follow California's lead on environmental and social progressiveness. These issues are inevitable; global warming is real and can not be ignored so fossil fuels are going to be replaced and Texas oil will eventually not be an asset to the state. The trends toward gay marriage and legalizing marijuana are also something that Texas will eventually accept in my opinion; it just takes longer in states where conservatism and evangelical belief is prevalent.
