My building was constructed in 1925, is far from luxury, and has all of that. Many buildings here do. So not necessarily true in Minneapolis.
I don’t think I’d move to Minnesota and live in a “building.” People live in buildings in California, Florida and New York. If I wanted to live in Midwest, where housing is abundant and reasonably priced, I’d be living in a single-family house.
MSP is a legit city. But wow those winters. I'd find myself taking those damn hamster tubes a lot and somehow justifying it in my mind. Because I'd probably live in a tower on the edge of Downtown.
PS I'm looking at Zillow for fun. You get get a decent one-bedroom on the edge of Downtown for $150,000. That's not a large down payment, it's the sale price.

The negative is that Minneapolis condos are depreciating more rapidly. Crime is also higher which are red flags. Not a complete deal breaker but definitely concerning.
I've been to both Minneapolis and Charlotte a number of times. Minneapolis is well ahead of Charlotte in so many areas. It's really not a fair comparison. Charlotte has a bright future, but it won't be catching Minneapolis anytime soon.
Culture: Minneapolis - no contest
Education: Minneapolis - no contest
Entertainment: Minneapolis - no contest
Diversity: Charlotte city proper and metro area might be more diverse on paper, but the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul are visibly more diverse than Charlotte
Transit/Transportation: Minneapolis - no contest
Urbanity: Minneapolis - no contest
Weather: sure Charlotte has better winters, but I take a lot more into account when I think of what makes a city / metro great.

Charlotte feels fresh and modern because IT IS a "new" city compared to the likes of Minneapolis.
As far as a younger feeling is concerned both Minneapolis and St. Paul have a median age that is lower than Charlotte's and there are several thousand more college students in Minneapolis and St. Paul than there are in Charlotte.
For roughly 3.5 years, I was an employee of Bank of American and made several work trips to Charlotte, not ever having been there before. You are correct about "fresh and young". I found the Uptown area a bit weird due to minimal historical architectural fabric and a lack of urban grittiness. It seemed to have been designed by Disney (just my opinion, back off homers). Look at historical population data by decade and that somewhat explains why Charlotte has a fresh, young, modern feel. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul established their commercial sectors and infrastructure long ago and IMO, have a bit more urbanity on offer.
