None of the zoos in Upstate NY cities are in ghetto neighborhoods. Most are in parks surrounded by largely stable neighborhoods. I dare say that Watertown NY is probably the smallest city with a zoo, while there isn't one in the Albany area. Binghamton(one of the oldest zoos in the US) and Utica have zoos though.
I haven't read this thread, but I can't think of ANY zoo in the "ghetto".
The closest I can think is the Philly Zoo, which is ghetto on one side, but not the other.
The Bronx Zoo area is working class and far from ghetto. Pelham Parkway, to the east, is totally fine and sorta nice in parts. Belmont, to the west, has more low income, but still safe and old-school Little Italy area.
South of the Bronx Zoo there are some sketch areas, but not right by the zoo boundaries. You would have to walk south a ways.
Lincoln Park Zoo, yuppieland, nope. Detroit Zoo in suburbia, nope. New Orleans Zoo in a wealthy neighborhood, nope. LA, SD, SF, Boston, DC, all nope.
