Both cities have a strong cultural influence in TV/film/art/social influence. Both are major port cities. Both cities people hustle. Both have good food influences especially with the huge variety of ethnic cultures. Both are very ethnically diverse cities. Both are quite dense in different ways. NYC is very dense at its core while the LA area is most dense in the Metro.

Overall I think LA is about 50 years behind trying to catch up to NYC when it comes to being a more centralized, more public transit, more walkable city, and taller city. Only in the past decade or so has LA really kicked it into the next level in terms of trying to improve these aspects which people often argue why these two cities are different. LA wont catch up to NYC in terms of high rises or skyscrapers and sheer peak density and huge public transit usage, but in the future these things wont be as big a deal as they are now. LA is really evolving and moving away from its past into something different.
I agree in fact I believe Los Angeles with it's real estate bubble and vast basin has the most potential of any U.S. city for vertical growth. Most mega cities go through their baby years with little vertical growth, some cities grow tall first but end up stunting their growth. LA has the perfect storm for a residential and commercial boom, paired with the lack of housing and homeless crisis. Here's a picture that describes how LA could look in 5 years if most all of the proposed projects go through (This is quite optimistic but can likely happen). I'd say before 2030 is more realistic.

2015

2025

It is definitely a city worthy of a super tall by then.

Could really see this happening. Nashville is a hotspot for celebrities. Atlanta is really popular among black celebrities, but several musicians and movie stars have relocated to Nashville recently.

Why would that make sense? Nashville is big when it comes to Country music, not so much in the film industry.

Nicole Kidman lives in Nashville, as well as Justin Timberlake, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift. None of them are country music stars.

But like...Nicole Kidman is married to a country music star (Keith Urban). Miley Cyrus is the daughter of a country music star and was born in TN. Taylor Swift got her start in pop country.

Atlanta is popular among all celebrities. Atlanta isn't the black mecca it was 20-30 years ago.

It may be more popular among all celebrities than it was before, but it still is very much a black mecca especially in entertainment with the emergency of the film industry to go along with the music industry.. I'm talking about metro Atlanta as a whole and not just the city limits which the demographics of have changed significantly in the last 20 years.

The film industry is booming in LA. Netflix announced that they will focus primarily on LA and are moving thousands of permanent jobs here. Amazon just bought and is expanding a studio in Culver City. More movies and TV shows seem to be filming here than anytime in the last 25 years.

Almost every Amazon series is filmed and set in Los Angeles.

Consider the streaming wars between them and Hulu/Netflix etc.

There's never been a better time to be an aspiring actor in Los Angeles in history.
