This is a tough call for me. These two areas are probably my favorite in North America (since BC was added in). I give the edge to New England for seafood by a hair. Same goes for coastal towns, but by a bit of a bigger margin. PNW would take a slight edge for recreation thanks to BC being added in and the quality of the the mountains up there for skiing, riding, hiking, etc. It would also take the slight edge for scenery now that BC has been added in as the drive from Vancouver to Whistler is simply amazing among other great sights.

New England has the benefit of being more of a beach area as it has better beaches and the water is warmer for the most part.

I would give New England the slight edge, but that edge is very small.

PNW wins in terms of seafood, because Washington has the best seafood of anywhere in the Country. Dungeness crab, amazing Salmon, incredible oysters and other shellfish, and a really strong culinary community. Oregon's seafood is not quite as good, though.

Not quite. The water temp is currently 69 degrees at Santa Monica beach and only 55 degrees at Bar Harbor beach, Maine, near Acadia National Park.

There New England Coast has a wide range of temperatures in the ocean, the Southern New England coast from Long Island Sound to Cape Cod gets warmer Gulf Stream currents. Current water temperature in Newport, Rhode Island today is 66 degrees (Coastal Water Temperature Guide), and will likely warm up well into the 70's in July and August.

But Maine (which it was I was comparing with) is quite a bit colder than the areas you mentioned.

True, but the New England coast is pretty big and temperatures vary along it. If someone likes warm water, they'll just choose an area with warmer water, like Cape Cod or the Connecticut coast along Long Island Sound. If they like colder water, they will choose Maine. It's not like the entire stretch of New England has waters as cold as Maine's.

Not necessarily true. In summer, yes, most of New England has warmer waters than the PNW. But by winter, the ocean is FAR colder in New England than the Pacific off of the west coast. The Pacific from Washington to California, like the West Coast's weather, is mild-warmer winters (and warmer winter SSTs) and cooler summers (and colder summer SSTs) than the East.

You can't swim (or do any other activities minus a wet suit) in New England (or anywhere north of Florida, really) or in waters from CA to Canada in the off season (meaning not summer, early fall, or late spring), who are you kiddin?!

You're going to comfortably be in the water anywhere not tropical or not close to being tropical during the winter? Please. In some places along both coasts, you can't even be in the water comfortably in the summer.
