I think ATL has more "ghetto" suburbs than your average city. I'm not sure how many other cities have an entire suburban county like Clayton County that gets described as ghetto. Factor in many parts of Southern Dekalb, Southern Fulton, etc. and it doesnt seem so unbelievable then.
Hate to be a contrarian here but you are badly misinformed in promoting the, "...an entire suburban county like Clayon that gets described as ghetto" mindset which you have done here.
If it were true, I would never have moved there in 2010.
Good gravy! Sometimes I can't believe the misinformation that anonymous people propagate here on the forum.
Atlanta has 400k+ people in the city limits and around 5 million in the suburbs so that would make sense
I know that bUT usually the inner city is really dangerous but when I picture suburbs I think of cities having maybe 1-5 a year. I stayed a week in College Park and it didn't seem like too good of a place though.
Mostly because Atlanta has smaller city limits so if it had let's say Houston city limits size it would cover all of these "Ghetto" areas south/north of the city and would also have areas east and west, if Atlanta didn't have rough suburbs it would be on of the safest metro areas because of how small the city limits are.

Miami is another city that sees about 75 murders and over 200 in Dade County.
NYC, in 2011, had 419 murders in the city. The metro area had 852 murders.
DC had 88 murders. The metro had 195.
Houston had 217, the metro had 349.
Detroit had 386, the metro had 469.
It's pretty widespread across the country, but Atlanta does have a higher ratio of murders in the suburbs to the city than a lot of places.

Yeah, I wish it were lower. Still, according to this FBI stat page you've linked, the Atlanta MSA has a lower homicide rate than Miami, Chicago, and SF, among others.
Homicide rates per 100,000:
Atlanta MSA - 6.1
Miami MSA - 6.3
Chicago MSA - 7.1
San Francisco MSA - 6.5
