Does DC really? And out of curiosity, does DC get Bmore stations like 92Q? I can get that out here in some places.
DC has two Hip Hop/R&B radio stations (WPGC and WKYS). 92Q is Bmore's station even though the station does have radio reception down here in the DMV. Magic 102 and WHUR often spin the more old school/golden era Hip Hop of the 80's and early 90's.
Just to mention, but when searching the St Louis and Cleveland areas in terms of predominately Black census tracts with a median household income above the state figure, St Louis had 9 such areas and Cleveland had 11 such areas. I looked at the majority of both areas, but there may be others. I'll try to post that info and for other areas later.
However, blacks in Houston are more spread out. Blacks in Houston are not mostly confined to one area like in DFW. They are all over the metro, making Houston more socially black than its neighbor to the north. You won't find too many areas in Houston where you won't see any blacks (maybe Montgomery County, but even then, I see many blacks up there shopping and eating out.) In DFW, I didn't see many at all many times, and it was based on the area I was in. I did see more when we were heading back to Houston.
Other DFW areas 2010 census quickfacts
Dallas County-2,518,638 23.1% black Harris County-4,441,370 19.5%
Mesquite 22%
Garland 14.5%
Grand Prairie 20.2%
Glen Heights 50%
Arlington 18.8%
Southwest corner of Dallas County over 60%
Lots of northern burbs 8-15%
Believe it or not but Atlanta multiple radio stations are recent history. V103 was only game in town up until 1995 and it was r & b only until they hired Greg Street away from Dallas and started playing rap. Then Hot 97.9 (now 107.9)started up with hip hop a month or so later. Other stations came on this decade.
Radio stations are important. It sets the mood of the city. I always knew I was close to NYC when Hot 97 would come on and Flex would be dropping nothing but heat back in the day
I completely agree. Can you imagine how different many black communities would be growing up without their own radio stations? connecting the black community with things going on in our neck of the woods, putting together events, concerts, ect.

Small southern metros with a high black population must be "black mecca" worthy when it comes to radio stations lol.
We've got three hip hop stations in Macon alone, Blazin 92.3, Power 107, and 97.9 WIBB
I think Columbus, GA has 3 too.
I would've thought these major cities had more.
Well since there are only so many stations that can be in one area, it probably cost alot more to get a spot on the airwaves not to mention advertise around town in a major city than in a smaller city. And the competition is still there if not thicker.

I believe that Augusta GA has 2 or 3 as well. In terms of smaller metros outside of the South, Albany NY has 2 Hip Hop stations, Jamz 96.3 and Power 99.1, with WCDB 90.1(the radio station from SUNY-Albany) having multiple Hip Hop shows.
Also, one other area I also looked at quickly was Columbia SC and I found 8 census tracts in that area that were predominately Black and had a median HH income above the state figure. That's without looking at the whole metro. So, there may be more.
As mentioned, if anyone wants to pick an area and post such info, USA Location information - USA.com is a great source and you can supplement with census websites like Quick Facts or American FactFinder.
