Sorry but according to MDAllstar, anytime Blacks move it's due to racism and oppression. Or is that only in the case of the West Coast?
Forgive me, but its hard to keep up with all of the double standards and hypocrisy put on the West in this thread.
Yes, thats nice but ironically the Bay Area has the second highest median income levels for Black households and families, behind DC, among the nation's 5 million+ population CSAs.
Also, as I said earlier, the Bay Area is 2nd only to New York as far as the total number of wealthy minority households, 40% more such households than DC-Baltimore.
Black people aren't moving to the burbs in the same metro areas in the west, they are leaving that entire side of the country. If people were moving out of San Fran to the burbs, nobody would be saying anything. This is an issue because black people are actually leaving the state of California altogether. The reality is, there are countless people on the forums that have talked about the hostile environment toward African Americans in the west. Check the forums on this website if you don't believe me.
I've been to 20 of the 23 largest North American cities. Toronto is the only one I found boring and underwhelming.
Toronto wasn't my cup of tea and it left me unimpressed. Mod cut: reply to post which has been deleted.
Its ok... Can't win them all.. If you do come back perhaps you could post in the Toronto forums indicating what you are interested in - what stirs your soul and perhaps we can lead you in the right direction. I've got some great travel advice from C/D posters that is very helpful in making a trip anywhere more fulfilling. Sometimes its good to be open to what local people have to say.. I didn't warm up to Barcelona on my first trip but after meeting some locals they completely changed my view of the city on subsequent visits. Each time just gets better and better than subsequent visits.
The definition of cosmopolitan is up for grabs here. Toronto is objectively the most diverse city of the group - no argument there, but in other measures, I would rank it third. D.C. and Chicago have significantly better cultural amenities, particularly high culture amenities: D.C has way better museums, and Chicago has better museums, symphonies, opera, theater. ITO the built environment Toronto is an undistinguished looking city. It has a huge skyline but very few buildings of note. It is economically insignificant compared to Chicago or the Bay Area. It's GDP is roughly half that of Chicago and less than two thirds of the Bay Area or DC. I like Toronto, but it feels provincial, huge but provincial. It has weird liquor laws. It shuts early. Sure the world is there, but it is mostly the petit bourgeois world. Except for the brutal winters, I would happily live there, and Canada is in many ways a more humane country than the U.S., but diverse is the word I would use to describe Toronto, not cosmopolitan.
I didn't get the impression on my visit to Chicago it had significantly better cultural amenities. In some areas yes in others no.. I'd give them an even ranking on musuems (D.C is on another level I would agree).. I'll give Chicago Opera and probably symphony orchestra to Chicago as well, but in theatre Toronto is a much larger theatre city. It wouldn't take much basic google researching to prove that.
As for architecture and particularly scraper architecture - well yes Chicago is grander. That is something that is just not up for debate because Chicago's booms were at a time when architecture really meant something. These days, not so much though Toronto may have more gems than you think. You'd have to thoroughly explore the city before rendering a final judgement on the matter I suppose and go just beyond scraper architecture.. Really delve into the flesh and bones of Old Toronto.
GDP is sticky because you are comparing two different countries who measure population in different ways. It would be interesting to not just compare a CSA or even MSA GDP against say a CMA GDP in Canada. A CMA is much smaller and more compact a measure than either of those.. If comparing the two, its like comparing a pineapple to an apple, completely different. I think if you used more equivalent measures they'd be more even than you think. It would also be interesting to compare median individual and family incomes as well.
As for Cosmopolitan - this is what we get as a definition
Objectively i'd say Toronto fits the cosmopolitan mold very very well.. Note where it states free from local, provincial or national ideas, prejudices or attachments, at home all over the world. Note belonging to all the world.. I'd say that Toronto and Cosmopolitan are a perfect marriage if you go by this definition.. Toronto gets a fresh infusion of people from around the world constantly.. If you don't get that or didn't experience it, you don't get or didn't experience Toronto. I'd also wager your definition of cosmopolitan, may be different than the true spirit of it which isn't just a grand old scraper or an older opera company or even a more renowned Symphony orchestra. People make a place cosmopolitan and not just an exclusive minority who attend that opera or eat at a Michelin ranked restaurant either, but people across the board in all facets of daily life as representatives of the world.
Black people aren't moving to the burbs in the same metro areas in the west, they are leaving that entire side of the country. I don't know why you keep acting like you're some expert or knowledgeable on CA's black population. Do you live in some online world or something and take everything you read on here as reality?
It's well known to many who actually live here that the black population of older established cities/areas (Oakland, SF, South LA, etc..) have been migrating to the cheaper exurbs for a while now. There was even a story about in today's paper about long time Oakland residents (all the people they used for the story were black) moving to the far flung suburb of Antioch. You can find plenty of news stories over the years reporting the same thing, blacks moving to cheaper inland suburbs.
The actual number of blacks has actually increased in the state, their proportion of overall population is decreasing but not absolute numbers.
I'll add Toronto's up and then include it in a future post. My previous compilation was nationalities and ethnicities overall, both immigrant and domestic borns.

Is that El Salvador number correct for DC, looks like an anomoly?
Also is this intended to be all countries? I just noticed south Pacific nations Tonga and Samoa missing and they have significant Bay Area populations.
Again, anybody moving from SF to DC isn't doing so because DC is cheap and slow.
To each his own. For someone like me, I would **never** move there to begin with it, but compared to here, DC is definitely cheaper and less hurried imo.
This seems to have rubbed you the wrong way?
