Most of the demographic of NYCs black and Latino community is very similar to Boston. We followed their lead.
That's really not true anymore, NYC has way more non-Caribbean Hispanics than Boston (not just raw numbers but also percentage wise).
In just about any PR/DR neighborhood you will find a lot of Mexicans and quite a few Ecuadorians and Hondurans. There are also a lot of neighborhoods where Mexicans or South Americans are the dominant Hispanics.
Probably the city with the least assimilated Mexican community is Chicago. They really keep to themselves there.

Every Latino Chicagoan I know is a die hard Bears fan and Sox/Cubs fan depending on where they grew up. Almost every Hispanic Chicagoan has a a variant of the traditional Chicago accent.
Chicago is somewhat segregated at the neighborhood level, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t assimilated.

Yes there’s more non Carribean Latinos now (in Boston and everywhere else too..) but PRs and DRs are by far and away the most numerous in NYC and it’s not even somewhat kinda sorta close. And they drive the Latino culture in NYC.

I say “somewhat segregated” because it is true at the neighborhood level outside the downtown core. You’ve got Black, White, Hispanic, and Asian neighborhoods. When you ride the train, depending on what line and direction you go, you can see the demographics starkly changing.
But in the downtown core (Loops, River North, Gold Coast) there are tons of professionals and you will see people living, working, playing from all races, ethnicities, nationalities.
It’s when you get outside the downtown core, when you start to see the segregation, hence why I said “somewhat segregated.”

I know damn well what assimilation means. Every city is going to have members of a specific community that assimilate and many who dont. For Mexicans, Chicago has a higher percentage of those that dont vs. pretty much any other major city Ive been to.
Want to see a community with an assimilated Mexican community, go to San Antonio. Many of them dont even speak Spanish. Chicago is more like Dallas. The Mexicans there build these massive communities with which they dont have to leave if they dont have to. Houston and LA are in between.

I really don't feel that Islanders dominate NYC Hispanic culture anymore.
In former PR strongholds like Bushwick and Sunset Park, Brooklyn, there are taco trucks everywhere and it seems like there may be more Mexicans than Puerto Ricans among the younger generation.
There are whole chunks of Queens dominated by South Americans as far as Hispanics go. And the Mexican and Ecuadorian populations are quickly growing in pretty much every PR or DR neighborhood.
I'd be surprised if Islanders still make up over 50% of the Latino population in NYC.
Mexico isn't as different from PR/DR as people think anyway. Reggaeton is the most popular genre in every Spanish speaking country.
