I wouldn't be surprised if it's true.

I have enough family members and friends that live and or have lived in impoverished ares throughout multiple big cities. 99% of the residents just want to go about their day and not bother/be bothered.

It's that 1% that truly screws it up for the rest of us, and give these cities/communities such a bad reps

Because California still had a 16% higher black homicide rate than Illinois (2012 stats), in fact California in 2012 was top 10 for black homicide rates while Illinois was not. And I imagine if that's how it is now then the 90s probably spread these two apart even more, because Chicago had more blacks in Chicago than all of LA County had total, yet LA County had almost 3 times as many homicides as Chicago in 1992.

Pennsylvania with a black homicide rate 34% higher than Illinois.

Even Nebraska with a black homicide rate 8% higher than Illinois.

Dayton mass shooter identified as 24 year old from Bellbrook.

https://www.cbsnews.com/amp/live-new...-live-updates/

Living in the Dayton area I have been to the Oregon District hundreds of times over the past decades and this is not something that happens there even though there was a shooting at Sloopy’s several years ago.

The local TV news has been covering this continually all morning.

First of all, why are you bringing up states? Not sure what that has to do with anything...

Also, we have to take into account that many of those homicides were Latino in LA County (with a majority-Hispanic population), whereas the vast majority of Chicago's homicides are black, around 80%. Let's say 50% was the percentage of murders in LA being black, as recent statistics shows it's around 36% of total homicides, so no doubt it was much higher in the early 90's when gang violence reached its peaked. This is just an estimate, until someone finds actual information on black homicide statistics of the 1990's. I was gonna use 1992 murder totals, but I'm gonna use 1990 murder totals here to remain consistent with 1990 census.

--

Based on 1990 census, LA's black population was 453,101. 50% of 983 being 491 murders.

That's a rate of 108/100k. Chicago had a black MALE murder rate of 120/100k in 2016, just to put it into perspective. LA black gangs had more casualties, as a result, the rate skyrocketed. The black male rate for LA would be higher if had the data, but it would easily place it ~200/100k

--

Based on 1990 census, Chicago's black population was 1,074,471. 80% of 850 being 680 murders.

That's a rate of 63/100k. The black male murder rate would be identical to 2016, based on natural male/female ratio. The loss of black population in Chicago during this time and becoming the second largest minority group behind Hispanics, dropping from above 1mil blacks to around 780k in 2016. The rate of violence in the black communities of Chicago reached or even exceeded 90's levels, without the population to match.

--

So, my understanding is that LA definitely had a very high black murder rate, higher than Chicago's, but wouldn't hold a candle to smaller cities like DC and New Orleans at the time. LA's gang situation was much worse than what us kids in our 20's could imagine, the numbers do it no justice. A lot of gang talk in this thread, but you dudes wouldn't wanna live that in the 90's lol. Believe!

We're speaking of city v city not other municipalities. There's major differences from city level to state level.

When possible, official government sources for that city are used instead of news articles. There are a handful of cities though where the statistics do come from recent news articles which specifically state the number of homicide in the year it is. A handful of cities' data comes from newspapers who keep tally of homicides, and these are used when an official up to date or semi up to date government source cannot be found. The date after each city represents when the data is current through in 2019.

Homicide rates are calculated using the US Census's latest population estimates, which is for year 2018.

Updates
- Numerous cities use crime mapping websites such as communitycrimemap.com to hold their data. I have changed the links from many of these sources to link to the city or police department website which links to the crime mapping website that they use. A few police departments such as Anchorage and Toledo link on their home pages, but the link is buried in things such as interactive menus, so I haven't changed those links.

- I updated Houston to not use their crime mapping anymore, which means the data is only through 5/31 now.
- I updated the source for Cincinnati as I have found their official statistics from their police department.

- I am using the newspaper source for Baton Rouge now. The source says 41, but my number says 40 because one of the crimes on the webpage listed took place in Zachary, LA. After investigating the other source which is from the government of Baton Rouge, it seems as if they are erroneously listing attempted homicides as committed homicides. We saw this in Boston's source too which is why I no longer use that one.

- I added a few new cities such as Dayton and Durham (North Carolina).
- I removed Lubbock for now as I found out their crime statistics page only filters through the last month, and not the dates you selected. Still looking for a reliable Cleveland source..

That's about what I figured. LA's black homicide rate was much higher than Chicago's. I actually remember reading 60% of victims in LA were black. I'd be curious to know how many of the 2,589 homicides in LA County were black as well.

What were DC and New Orleans black homicide rates? I don't think they were much worse than LA at all. Not DC at least, maybe New Orleans.
