Austin made two major errors as it pertains to its skyline. The 1st and biggest error by far is designing the Austonian to not face the River. The other is giving the approval to build the monstrosity known as the Independent AKA the Jenga tower.
I wouldn't like the Austonian facing the river. I think having it face east/west balances out the skyline and makes the skyline more "iconic", (for lack of a better term), from those directions, especially the east.
There is no scientific definition of a skyscraper. But let's look at some basic stats here.
-24 of the 25 tallest buildings in Dallas were built before 1990
-23 of the 25 tallest buildings in Austin were built after 2000
-Dallas has 3 buildings completed or under construction over 150m built since 2000
-Austin has 10 buildings completed or under construction over 150m built since 2000
-Austin has an additional 3 buildings approved over 150m, Dallas has 0
-Austin's current tallest, the Independent, will likely be its 4th tallest by 2023
My money's on Austin here.
Good for you. My money isnt. But why argue about something neither of us can prove? Im not interested in that.
Yeah Dallas skyline has much more character than Austin. Don't get me wrong Austin skyline is nice but lacking in any recognizable skyscrapers. But very impressive how quickly Austin's skyline evolved over the decades.
Older things usually have more character.

Austin's has yet to mature.
Give it 20 years, it will grow on you.

Those shots are gorgeous. I think I prefer the bright but not gaudy night time shots of Austin's skyline to the muted night shots of Houston or the Over the top lighting of Dallas's skyline.

As a non Texas native and someone who really is indifferent on everywhere in Texas, i think Austin's is more impressive right now. Dallas is good.. but Austin has a big advantage to it: Uniqueness.
One of my first Urban Planning classes actually featured a lecture on Austin. One of my favorite buildings (Modern Building, that is) is the Independent. Wish Boston could build something like that.
Eventually Austin will have it's 74 story, 1,000 ft+ supertall to add to the mix. Will be interesting to see how it and the nearly 20 other towers to be built and their impact on the skyline.
I hate the design of that super tall though. Austin needs something more sleek to balance out the ugliness of The Independent.

Not really. This thread is full of "Austin is ok.....for a little guy" comments. One poster even shifted the conversation. "Forget 400+, the definition of a skyscraper is 450+ and Austin is very lacking there. But it's growing." Again, I get and actually understand why alot of Texans don't like Austin.
