I was thinking San Diego.

San Antonio/Austin will not be gifted an NFL franchise. I’ll fall just short of saying never, but it is highly HIGHLY unlikely. The reason?-

Dallas Cowboys.

While there is a lot of focus on smaller cities, The New York Islanders would not exist. They were created to box the WHA out of the NYC market, rather than the best actual place for a Hockey team.

How about Orlando? Is it a large enough city/metro to have an NBA team?

Tell that to their 4 Stanley Cups. Regardless if they were created out of competition or not, the Isles would still exist today as the NY market can support 3 NHL teams. Add to that their loyal fanbase whose attendance will drastically improve with the building of their new arena (UBS Arena) set to open next season.

Yeah definitely, especially considering Tampa.

If there was no professional hockey league and then suddenly there was one NYC would likely have two teams.

The Islanders literally have the lowest ratings on the entire league. Sure technically 3 teams can survive in NYC. Toronto or Montreal could support another team too but the NHL decides over and over more markets are better than doubling down.

There would likely be a team in Portland or KC in a vacuum of just new teams placed ideally instead of NYC III.

My guess is the cities that are willing to fork over the tax dollars to pay for a big modern multi million dollar footbal stadium for the team to play in would get a team.

Those cups were 40 years ago. Their paltry attendance will go up with a new arena, but the novelty will wear off if they don’t win. All of this is irrelevant to the topic of the thread though? The only way the Islanders would exist in the OP scenario is if one of the other two NHL teams didn’t exist in NYC? If things were to start over from scratch the NYC metro would not have 3 NHL teams.

That's because they were in Brooklyn and were a "rent-a-team" while there. Brooklyn never embraced hockey or the team the way the franchise had hoped. The move also alienated a huge portion of their fanbase and as I said the new arena on the Island will improve their ratings and attendance big-time.

I do agree that the NHL wants new markets that have all the resources to successfully support expansion.
