It is the 14th largest metropolitan area in the United States with 4,115,871 people. It is also known as Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario MSA (Riverside and San Bernardino Counties). It is located in Southern California, directly adjacent to the east of Los Angeles and Orange Counties and northeast of San Diego. It is a part of "Greater Los Angeles" when included in the Combined Statistical Area for L.A.
The Inland Empire isn't really that well known due to mainly feeling like a distant suburb of L.A., but it does have its own economy (more blue collar than L.A./OC). The MSA lacks one major city that feels like the heart of the region as it is almost all suburban sprawl and there are no impressive cultural attractions and such to make it noticeable. It is mainly a boom region where Southern Californians have moved for a lower cost of living compared to Los Angeles, Orange County, and San Diego. The Inland Empire really is just another part of Southern California. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inland_Empire_(California)
I live in Indianapolis, right outside of downtown in a neighborhood called Fountain Square. Would not live anywhere else.
