Well, you might want to visit before drawing conclusions (or rely on durf as your travel agent). These lists, which are sometimes called into question for accuracy, include "tourists" as well as family and business travelers. All I can say is that there is an open-topped busload of tourists that passes down my street about every 15 minutes. I can guarantee you I never saw one such bus in the 25+ years I lived in Houston.

Philadelphia is portrayed in the media as bad, but the average person who goes there loves it.

Philadelphia is great and so are the people. Even though I respect durf, since he travels a lot and knows every single street in Philly DC NY ECT, I guess you could listen to him. He knows where hes going if you ask me.

Then again I dont know why durf was banned, there really wasn't a good enough region. All he was doing was trying to make his city look good and I respect that. Then again

Philadelphia is one of the most educated, most fun, great people, great downtown, and great food.

I mean living in downtown philadelphia is great. I know people who live in philly who never leave the downtown, or surrounding areas to do anything except meetings and what not but thats another story.

Philly is just my type of a city with tons of history and many unique neighborhoods. Philadelphia could possibly be the second most urban city in The U.S. and is completely livable without a car because of good public transit. Natives are passionate about their sports teams and there are many sports bars of high quality in the city. The food is amazing with tons of pizzerias, delis, etc. On top of this Philadelphia has an extremely low cost of living for what a citizen gets in return. On a side note, I never realized how many California/Bay Area residents disliked Philadelphia.

i don't think that's a real thing. it seems as though bay area boosters see philly as competition and so many seem to have the weird idea that knocking down philly a peg will be good for the image of the bay area or something like that.

in other words it seems to be just a weird c-d thing... i don't think most people who live in the bay area really even think about philly that much and vice versa, and when they do i doubt it's in the manner the two sides attack each other here as though there is a rivalry

I'm not listening to Durf. I'm just stating that I've been to NYC, Atlanta, L.A, San Diego, San Fran, Chicago and even San Jose. I planned on visiting Boston, D.C, Miami and Seattle sometime this year or next. Philly and Baltimore are the two cities I never thought about visiting. I'm pretty sure they are nice places. I just don't hear much about them other than negative things. I'm curious to see what Philly has to offer. I will stop by someday when i'm in Atlantic city for WPT tournaments.

Why is this thread not in the Philly forum? This has nothing to do with city vs city. Are the mods sleeping?

phamb - We're all different, but if your experience is anything like mine, you may be pleasantly surprised. We visited two years ago and ended up moving here. We were expecting a dirty, pushy, concrete jungle but were surprised to find tree-lined streets and a very clean and tidy environment (at least in Center City). We combined Philly and Baltimore into that first visit - easy to do. My guess is that if all you've heard about Baltimore is negative, you'll be impressed by that city, as well.

I am a big fan of history and do like dense urban area. I always have fun visiting places like Manhattan, chicago loop, San Fran and European cities. I'm just surprise that Philly have so much potential and does a poor job at attracting visitors. I planned on moving back to Vegas but might consider Atlantic city/Philly area. How is the commute between city center and the casinos? I don't drive too well in ice/snow.

Philly actually does remarkably well attracting visitors considering its proximity to a major global destination about 2 hours away (interestingly, the local tourism organization is getting pretty savvy and advertising heavily in NYC to encourage visitors there to "day-trip" it down to Philly). According to Forbes, it was actually among the Top 10 (#9) US cities in 2009 for visitors:

List: America's Most-Visited Cities - 9. Philadelphia, Pa.: 30,320,000 visitors - Forbes.com

It's also important to note that, as compared to business travelers in Atlanta and Houston, Philadelphia's visitors are primarily leisure travelers.

It's not ridiculously far, but it certainly wouldn't be a breeze. Probably somewhere around 75 min. on the AC expressway.
