Even if we were to accept the SAT as a valid metric to compare academic quality, the fact that not every student takes the SAT in every state makes that ranking system fundamentally invalid. It is far from an apples-to-apples comparison when you can have wildly different SAT participation rates between schools.

Again, the NAEP, which is what the ranking you've provided is predicated upon, has been shown to be extremely controversial and flawed in its assessment:

" NAEP’s benchmarks, including the proficiency standard, evolved out of a process only marginally better than throwing darts at the wall. That’s a troubling conclusion to reach in light of the expenditure of more than a billion dollars on NAEP over 40-odd years by the U.S. Department of Education and its predecessors. For all that money, one would expect that NAEP could defend its benchmarks of Basic, Proficient, and Advanced by pointing to rock-solid studies of the validity of its benchmarks and the science underlying them. But it can’t. "

NAEP: A flawed benchmark producing the same old story - The Washington Post

I will be the first person to tell you that it is difficult to truly objectively compare academic standards between different states, as there are many complicating factors.

This. My bad for jumping in without context. I had been skimming the thread with the back and forth about Asian test scores and must've missed something vital. Plus, I was at the bar at my alma mater. So yeaa...

UC SB is more on par with Leigh (Both great schools) but here is the actual ranking:

National University | Rankings | Data | US News | page 2

Oh and btw sometimes overall rankings are very meaningless because programs vary greatly internally within an institution.
Im not implying anything. The USNews Natl ranking is only undergrad but their world ranking combines undergrad and grad schools, it just so happens UCSD is a science and research heavyweight.

In fact, the University of California system is clearly the best public university system in the world based on its stellar performance in just about every world ranking.

Yes, NAEPs own methods and testing is highly questionable, but their research into individual state standards are not.

And I agree, there is no easy answer. I was simply reminding Walnut that a CA education is a bit better than he seems to think. Lol

^Good find. I noticed he posted the wrong link before. Interesting how much damage the corporate tax rate has done to the Philly metro over the course of a decade and a half. Also not to take anything away from the "cool factor" of having a Corpration HQ'd in your town, but most of these places (especially the really huge companies) have corporate offices and hubs in a lot of different metros.

Here is a 2014 list, since 2014 is the most recent year available for Fortune 1000 data. I will exclude New York, don't have the type of time to organize over 115 of these.

Wow, thank you for catching that! I must have clicked on the wrong link. Pretty sad how many large companies Philly has lost. Delaware has gone from 4 Fortune 1000s to 2. New Jersey side of the metro has gone from 6 to 4. Pennsylvania side of the metro has gone from 31 to 25.

Exactly what Thedirtypirate said, this truly indicates how much the corporate tax in these states are driving companies out of the area or halting their growth.

People vilify standardized tests, then turn around and label school districts as 'good schools' or 'bad schools' based on standardized test scores.

So if you're against standardized testing, then you shouldn't be parading those statistics around.

Make up your minds.

I've got to guess that at most, you've been to downtown Denver and between DIA and downtown, you were unclear on what side of town you were on. Denver is one of the most unconstrained cities, geographically, in the entire country. As such, it really really sprawls in all directions. The city itself is actually very similar to Atlanta in a lot of ways, though in my opinion it's an improvement on what is a smaller version of Atlanta. Aurora is East of downtown. That direction is seeing explosive growth with a huge new hospital, lots of apartments, and a new Gaylord resort. The biggest constraint on western cities is not geography, but water rights.

And while Philly is "inland" because it has some Jersey between it and the actual coast, for all intents and purposes to the rest of the country, along with DC to lesser extent but to an extent, it's "east coast", and when people think of Philly, they don't think "land-locked" or "inland" like Chicago, Saint Louis, Dallas, Atlanta, etc etc.

Really I don't know why we're having this huge debate about why Philadelphia is cheaper than Boston. There is absolutely no reason to get defensive about it. We're not talking Detroit here, we're talking Chicago, Houston, Denver, Portland pricing here. It's a solid group of cities. If a city can be safe, offer amenities and culture, good transit, quality of life, good schools, etc AND be cheap, that just means it hasn't been fully discovered yet. Usually there is one thing on that list that is failing for a city to be cheap, but in some cases a city is just highly undervalued or just newly amazing and so undiscovered. Either way, it's really not a good thing when a city becomes outrageously expensive...can often mean a place is way overvalued and these titanics of industry haven't quite yet made the turn to cheaper alternatives.

No point in being on the defensive about why a place is less expensive.

A city of 1.5 million people and metro area of 6 million isn't fully discovered yet?
