Oh good, I can put my safety back on. I didn't want a bunch of pics of DT Atlanta vs say, the Dallas Galleria area in revenge. You know how it is around these parts...

I don't know why I've been so jumpy lately.I need to switch to decaf...

After tons of research, architectural history classes, and time spent working in the architecture field, I see Houston and Dallas/Fort Worth's name pop up much more than Atlanta's. So I guess I'm mostly judging on hear say, well known architects who buildings in the area, and Pritzker Prize winning buildings and architects.

Here's a few buildings in Fort Worth that come to mind:

Kimbell Museum of Art- it was designed by Louis Kahn, one of the most famous architects in American history. He only designed a few buildings, but this arguably his most famous building. Architects from all over the country will travel to Fort Worth just to see this museum. I believe he won a Pritzker Prize for it.

Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth- designed by internationally renowned Japanese architect, Tadao Ando

Marty Leonard Chapel- designed by Fay Jones who, imo, has done some of the best religious architecture in the post Frank Loyd Wright era.

Fort Worth Water Gardens- designed by Phillip Johnson

All of those architects are Pritzker Prize winners. I think that's pretty good for a city who lives in Dallas' shadow. Speaking of Dallas... you have HKS Architects (they designed the New Cowboys Stadium) which is currently the fourth largest firm in the country. There's also the Wyly Theater, which was designed by the New York firm REX which is one of, if not the best young firm in the country. The Wyly Theater is one of the most exciting new buildings in the country. You also have the Winspear Opera House designed by London based firm, Foster and Partners, one of the most reputable firms in the world. There's also Fountain Place, designed by IM Pei, which is my personal favorite skyscraper in the South.

I just scratched the surface on Dallas architecture. Seriously, if you don't think Dallas has some great architecture, I can make you a more extensive list of places to see.

But in spite of all this, Houston is still more reputable than Dallas in the architecture world.... but I think that's a conversation for another thread.

As for Atlanta, yeah there are some good firms and decent architecture, but over all, I just haven't been that impressed by Atlanta architecture. I just haven't heard of or seen anything out of Atlanta that I've found to be all that appealing. But like I said, it's not like I'm an expert on Atlanta architecture.
You do realize that Phillip Johnson is the architech for many of Atlanta's most famous buildings?

One of I.M. Pei earliest buidings was in Atlanta.

I agree with you.Fort Worth definitely has more older historical buildings that have been preserved.

Is this the building with the faux, painted on brick? If so, gag me. Bass Hall is awesome though inside and out. Hopefully checking out the Winspear next month.
