Dallas police investigating 5 killings that occurred in 12-hour period
4:14 AM Tue, Apr 27, 2010
The brutal killing of Dallas Morning News delivery driver Robert Lawrence in south Oak Cliff Monday morning is getting a lot of media attention.
But that murder is one of five that were reported in about a 12-hour period beginning Sunday afternoon. The Dallas murder tally stands at 50. It was at 44 at this time last year, according to police statistics.
A brief summary of the five homicides:
• Sunday, 3:15 p.m.: Donald Ray White, 33, of Dallas is found shot outside an apartment in the 6900 block of Skillman Street near Walnut Hill Lane. White died at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas. No arrests were reported.
• Sunday, 5:25 p.m.: Dallas police find a man dead in a garbage container in an alley in the 6000 block of Lazy River near East Red Bird Lane and Houston School Road. He is later identified as 21-year-old Derrick Futch, missing since earlier this month. No arrests were reported.
• Sunday, 6:45 p.m.: Tony Romo, 25, is fatally shot in an apparent domestic disturbance outside his home in the 3800 block of Dixon Circle near Dixon Avenue and Scyene Road. Romo's father-in-law, Gerardo Sanchez Davila, 42, of Mesquite is arrested on a murder charge.
• Monday, 3 a.m.: Robert Lawrence, 58, is fatally shot and robbed while dropping off newspapers at a convenience store near the intersection of Frio Drive and Ann Arbor Avenue. Police are looking for two suspects.
• Monday, 3:15 a.m.: Francisco Cuenca, 23, of Dallas is shot in the 5200 block of Ash Lane near South Munger Boulevard. Police arrested 22-year-old Edgar Carrasco, who said he thought Cuenca was breaking into his vehicle.
If you have any information on these cases you can call Dallas police at 214-671-3661 or email.
despite the large increase in murders in nyc , this week was 70 percent less violent then the same week as last year with 3 murders compared to 10 murders in the week of 4/19/10 - 4/25/10
New Orleans now has 72 murders and now has a per capita rate of 20 murders per 100,000 that actually dwarfs every major city in America. If you look at the national news you would think that Chicago is by far the the most lethally violent city in the country, when in fact, Chicago only looks like a warzone compared to New York and Los Angeles because of those cities historic declines in murders recently. Even Jesse Jackson had the nerve to speak on national tv regarding Chicago's crime problems which showed just how clueless he is by not knowing that the situation down here in New Orleans has been consistantly dire for quite some time with no signs of getting better at the moment.
The ironic thing about Chicago is the national media has picked up on stories and everything is "wave of violence cripples city".
In reality, murder in Chicago is down over 50% from the 1990's. This year is roughly on par with the past 5 years - and those years were the lowest in murders since the city started keeping stats decades ago.
Violent Crime:
1991: 90,522
2009: 33,486
Violent crime down 63%
So far in 2010, murder is up around 8% from last year, down 13% from the year before, and violent crime is down 13% from last year.
It's certainly BAD in this city - but this whole media thing that everything is totally falling apart and out of control is confusing given this is the best year so far since record keeping began.
It really makes you realize how media outlets can really drive stories and viewpoints. Branding Chicago as having unprecedented crime problems this year - when in fact this year easily has the lowest violent crime rates of the past 50 years! Shouldn't it be the opposite!? Or maybe it's just that crime has gotten under control enough here that they can really focus on the individual stories and aspects, as opposed to just listing off stats without any human side.

Yeah, just goes to show that perception rarely correlates with reality when it comes to crime rates. People forget that the occasional 3+ homicides per day during the warm months is a long-standing tradition in Chicago.
I am a bit concerned that the trend line may be heading upward given the massive understaffing of the CPD and bad economy, but its still too early to draw definitive conclusiosn.

The only problem is that in many places around the city there have already been more murders in certain neighborhoods so far this year than all of last year, therefore many precincts will see a rise no matter how good their area does for the rest of the year.

I am sorry that the world does not have much understanding for this and other of Chicago's great long-standing traditions....

I don't have a problem with people who think this "tradition" is awful, because of course it is. I have a problem with ill-informed people who think this is a new trend and evidence that crime is spiralling out of control.
