I agree with most of what clb said except for the public transit. I don't see how BART is even close to Metro. They are basically the same system with similar trains. The big difference being Metro is by far, more extensive than BART. DC's bus system isn't bad at all. I especially like the Circulator buses. Only thing you could say SF has over DC there are the streetcars. However, DC currently has their own system being built right now.
Which will be as big as San Francisco's streetcar system.
Under construction D.C.'s Streetcars:
D.C. streetcar Network
8 lines
Total length:
37 miles
San Francisco streetcars:
Muni Metro and
F/Market Line
Muni Cable Cars* and **
Total Length:
36.8 mi (59.2 km)
8.8 mi (14.2 km)
On a side note, when the streetcars are completely done, look for the city proper D.C. transit ridership to increase close to 50% transit ridership comparable to NYC at 54% transit ridership.
If San Francisco or any city for that matter expects to compete with D.C. in mass transit over the next decade...you better get started now. D.C. rail transit ridership is about to widen the gap even more from the rest of the country outside of NYC. The numbers will be staggering.
Streetcars = Under construction
Silver Line = Under construction
Purple Line = Expected to begin construction in 2013/2014

That and Virginia plans to extend the blue, yellow, and orange lines as well. The silver line is under construction and the purple line is now in the design phrase of small details. Also Virginia want it to run across over the Potomac river to Tysons Corner. This will be a vital connection for people traveling suburb to suburb without entering the city. Metro also plans to increase core capacity on metro and will build another line through downtown as well as build the blue line split subway which will put a station in Georgetown. MARC and VRE will also expand service and create new lines.
D.C. will have the second best public transit system in the country in every category.
I am a San Francisco native living in the DC area. I can't believe DC is even winning this poll. San Francisco is infinitely more beautiful than DC. No city in America can compare to the awesome balance of natural and manmade beauty that exists in SF.
San Francisco also offers much more freedom that you can't find in other major American cites. In SF, you can light up a joint on the sidewalk almost anywhere. I know all the DC residents reading this are balking even at the thought of smoking Mary Jane. In terms of good food, good weed, mild weather and the greater quality of life, SF takes the cake. Over 300 days of sun a year and no 100 degree days or snowmaggaedons. If DC was truly better than SF, then why is SF much more expensive to live in? It is because there is a superior more expensive quality of life in the City by the Bay. Don't get me wrong I love DC, but I will always love SF much much more.

Yeah a lot has changed since May, 2010. For one, I got to know Washington DC infinitely better, because now I actually have a residence in Northern Virginia (since October, 2010). Also contrast to when I first joined this site (March, 2010) I am a ways lot more blunt now about what I like and dislike, before I would just keep my opinions for places I didn't like to myself and try to pass it off like that its okay in my books.
I also couldn't help but notice but contrast to when I first joined this site, I used to say city names by the acronym (I.E SF, DC, LA, NYC, or such) and now I just type out the entire and full name of any given city being discussed (I.E Washington DC, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, or such).
