Those lists are based on national reputation, which is why us news is the most credible. Since you're well versed on the ranking of middle tier schools, you might also notice the rankings don't change much.

You might also know that the numerical ranking isn't necessarily indicative of the school's tier. The distance between 4 and 5 on the list is probably a lot shorter than between 9 and 10. Certainly between 36 and 37

Um... what? How do you know how far 36 and 37 are separated? As far as I know with the US News rankings 1 and 2 can be just as close or far as 36 and 37. And national reputation is only one of several criteria that are used.

This is completely speculative. What do you mean "the rankings don't change much?" From year to year?

"Probably" a lot shorter? based on......?

Ad hominem. Wanna stick with that, or say something intelligent?

It's not to be taken literally. I'm implying that the difference in reputation (and quality of students) is probably larger than the rankings imply. Though only 37 spots divide Stanford or Harvard and CWRU, the difference in quality and reputation of the schools is MUCH farther than between CWRU and whatever school is ranked 74.
