Thanks for the correction about Wilson's. I've been out of the area for several months, and wasn't really in that section of Wilmington the last time I was there. That's a shame about Wilson's - and Alleigh's. I was at Alleigh's a few times - nice place, really filled a niche. I wonder why these kind of places do not last very long in Wilmington.

As to the "correction" about Landfall and Wrightsville Beach.... I think that you misunderstood what I meant ... and maybe I wasn't as clear as I could have been.... So... when I typed this phrase:
Quote:
They said it was a pretty rough neighborhood to live in. Anyway, New Centre is a good ways away from that area. It's kind of close to the Landfall area, and from there (edit: meaning Landfall) of course, not far from Wrightsville Beach.
What I meant to say, and should have been clearer about, was this:

I lived in Brunswick County during most of the trips I made through Wilmington. Therefore, the "rough" section of town was closest to the Cape Fear bridge - that end of town. New Centre was kind of in the middle of town. And from New Centre, it is really not that far to Landfall - "kind of close", I wrote. I didn't say "right next door" or "within walking distance". You just take a couple back roads onto Oleander/Military Cutoff - and Voila!, You're at Landfall in just a few minutes ( as long as there are no traffic jams) I did it many, many times. And from Landfall, it is not far from Wrightsville Beach - another "hop, skip, and a jump". Again, this is all assuming no traffic jams. I know Wilmington can get a few of those - only got caught in a very few myself. Most of my time tooling around Wilmington had a good traffic flow, and was pretty uneventful. The city of Wilmington is not really that large in area, so it doesn't take that long to get from one end to another.

Hope that irons out any misunderstandings.

Also, Florida15, can you (or any other forum member) verify the names of some of the streets in the so-called "rough section of town"? It's been so long, I can't really remember that area well. It might be good for a visitor to have some street names.

I really appreciate all the help. I know it will be a change from what I'm used to, but change is what I'm looking for.

I was wondering what are some good restaurants down there? We're going down on my Mom's birthday and I want to take her out for a nice dinner.

I'm not a seafood eater myself, but I had a friend who used to live in Wilmington that swore by the Oceanic. I have been in the restaurant, and the views are exquisite. I can't vouch for the food, but my friend was definitely a "foodie" - and a seafood lover, and knew her stuff.

THE OCEANIC RESTAURANT

If the oceanic is crowded you can also check out Blue Water at Wrightsville beach owned by the same people, but on the Intercoastal Waterway instead, you can watch the boats go by etc. Also, there is also Dockside which is usually packed and is also on the waterway. For ocean views though you cannot go wrong with the Oceanic, they have delicious food and I crave the hushpuppies on a regular basis!
