Unless something has changed in the last 10-15 years, I don't know why he'd need to take differential calculus again to have a better understanding of what's in store for him with integral calculus.
However, he should do whatever he's more comfortable doing.
Depending on the school, testing out of Calc 1 could be a big deal. There are so many recommended and required courses to take for health science professional schools that the additional free three credit hours could allow your son to take something that fits in the "useful but not required" category.
I retook calc 1 because I was worried that "engineering calc 1" would be much harder than high school. It was difficult but easier than many other math classes I took. It was a great "warm-up" for the college style of learning/testing. I would much rather have an easier class to help me adjust to the college way of doing things instead of adding one more thing to overwhelm me.
Don't they have to take whatever is required for their major?
