It really depends on your degree and field you go into.
My boyfriend in college was a philosphy major. He used to give me such hell about my GPA being below 3.0.
However, I have an engineering degree and nobody's ever asked for my GPA except grad school.
It's true, it definitely hurt my first job prospects but after that - nope. Even with grad school, I was able to get accepted to 3 different schools once I had 5+ years work experience and a high GRE score.
GPA definitely matters for teaching and higher-ed positions I've researched. I'm not certain about the publishing industry, but definitely so for education.
