we just moved to the columbia area too. we are from florida as well. we do miss florida but it was getting too expensive for a teacher's salary. we love it here and plan to buy a house in irmo as soon as we sell back in fl. i do not see how the crime here is bad at all but then i am comparing it to florida

Congrats on the new position DadofTwo. I also live in Irmo and love it here. What school are you teaching at?

LOL...I'm glad you're enjoying it so far. Feel free to give me a ring if you would like a few places to visit or eat. If you like hockey the Inferno games are a blast and should be starting soon.-Brandon

Do you mind explaining this statement? Being single, female and probably a little too sensitive, I don't know if I'd like to get "funny looks" from people. Maybe I'm reading too much into this statement.

JustNancy....he may be talking about that look of " You aren't from around here are you?" or better yet the "Who do you think you are?" stare that I get in Savannah, GA. I'm from Columbia and we talk a little different than the people in the low country SC [that frequent the Savannah area]. As soon as i opened my mouth they asked looked at me weird. Now Savannah is has been an adjustment for me and not to knock the city or area, but it made me realize how wonderful of a city Columbia, SC actually is.

I wish I had left a couple of weeks ago for SC. I am taking a course next week and then I need to decide what to do. I thought I had zeroed in on Greenville, but I am a little concerned about making the wrong choice. Sounds as if Greenville doesn't have a smoking ban at all. In FL the ban is statewide, although I've worked in places where my boss would still light up inside the building. I just don't think I can go back to all that coughing and wheezing because other people have an addiction. At one point I simply stopped going out at night.
I guess I need to drive up and see for myself before making a decision of where to settle down.

You definitely need to visit all of your possibilities before making a decision.

i am referrring to the school's reputation - it is like would you work here? but like i said it is piece of cake compared to back home. mainly because the parents are supportive. i have not gotten any strange looks for not belonging here. quite contrary people have been awesome and showing great southern hospitality!

True. I know there have been many threads comparing the 2 areas, but if you could list 3 differences (Columbia/Greenville) what would they be? For example I could list many of the differences between Fort Myers and Naples in a heartbeat, although they're only about 40 miles apart.
