Yea cause Southie, Lowell, Springfield and Worcester is all that. Oh yea, and Fall River.

Reports made soley for hawking $$ are dubious at best.

CQ Press: Book: City Crime Rankings 2010-2011, Kathleen O'Leary Morgan , Scott Morgan , Rachel Boba

I'm not saying New Haven and Hartford don't have problems...but the stats are definetly skewed yet again by their geogrphical size in comparision to the region they serve.

Agreed. There is a HUGE difference between #2 Camden, NJ, and #18 New Haven. I've felt unsafe in parts of New Haven every so often, but my neighborhood is safe and I haven't had any problems thus far (knock on wood). I have never, ever felt safe visiting Camden.

Additionally, if you look at surrounding metro regions and not just the cities (a separate part of the same study - I can find the link if anyone's interested), the New Haven-Milford region drops significantly further down the list.

You forgot Providence.

What is interesting about that list is that most of the cities noted are pretty big. That means there is overall a lot more crime than there is a in small city like Hartford or New Haven which has less population and less area. Overall I would say this is just another one of those stupid lists that come out without a lot of thought or common sense put into it. Jay

I have generally felt unsafe in New Haven and Hartford. Jay, I'm not sure why you mentioned Providence. According to CD, it has a much lower crime rate than both Hartford and New Haven, and even Bridgeport. I know...crime stats aren't always the most reliable, but it's gotta mean something, right?

I mention Providence because it is a major New England city that has a crime problem. Up until recent years Providence was up there with the highest in New England. There has been some gentrification of the city but it still has its issues. Jay

I think it's like that for people who didnt grow up in Hartford. I've been working in Hartford for the last 5 years and when I walk to my office from the parking lot I can afford I am always looking around and over my shoulders being constantly aware of my surroundings. I feel uneasy at some points, but never like I'm in danger as long as there are other people around.

A lot of it has to do with where I was raised. I grew up in Middlebury and never spent time in Hartford or New Haven until I was 21 and going to the bars. I would go to Waterbury occasionally when I was younger, but i never went by myself and avoided the green and North End.

Just be aware of your surroundings and put they head on a swivel... If you think someone is following you, there are many windows downtown in both cities you can check your reflection in without it being obvious that you are looking at the person behind you. Also, dont go in the bad neighborhoods if you have no need to be there.

I think a lot of it has to do with the insane amount of shootings, stabbings, murders, and robberies Hartford and New Haven have to deal with. New Haven has had 22 homicides so far this year - 22! That's 22 lives taken due to senseless acts of violence, and unfortunately, that number will probably rise in the coming days. Take a walk on Wooster Street lately? Check out the glass all along the road. More than 50 vehicles have been broken into in that area in just one week. Visit the "oh so safe" downtown area? How many shots have rung out in the entertainment district in the past few weekends with police and bar hoppers everywhere? This is not normal, people.

Lets not gloss over the fact that our cities are pretty dangerous when compared to other cities in the country. I know the cheerleaders for CT here are going to claim "but other cities are much larger in land area" which is very true, but it still doesn't change the fact that the small city of New Haven IS dangerous - do we really need to compare it to Dallas, TX (huge in land area) to boost our ego?

The first step toward recovery is admitting there is a problem.

The police set up a sting in Wooster Square and caught two people with tools ready to break into a car. Interesting that that didn't make it into your writeup.

My neighborhood has regular theft-from-auto cases, but mostly because people leave things in their cars that could be stolen. We take everything out of our car except for a box of tissues and a road atlas, and thus far we've been okay, even when break-ins go up.

Many of the homicides are gang and/or revenge related. People who do not have connections with gangs generally have nothing to worry about. I think jaydez has it right about being aware of your surroundings and staying out of bad neighborhoods. Last year was one of New Haven's lowest crime years on record - by all accounts things are significantly better than they were 20 years ago, although I don't think anyone would argue that they're perfect.

I'd still much rather live here than in Camden.

I am shock that Bridgeport is not on this list. I was picking up a friend at Bridgeport train station and I saw alot of Hookers,Drug dealers and alot fights in that area . After seeing all that trash in Bridgeport I feel more safe walking around Yankee stadium with a Red Sox hat on .
