I'm not knowledgeable about the OP's field, but i'm guessing that there could be opportunities opening up in MA with the casinos coming down the pipeline.

I feel the need to clarify some things here. First, her job offer is not going to be in the SW part of the state. I don't question the strength of being within the outer NY area, such as Stamford, not for one second. If I knew I (we) could make decent money, I'd be up for moving there. Nor do I think that the entire state is backwards. If I gave people that impression I apologize. I just do not believe I will have the opportunity to move to, or work in, Stamford, or near there, as she will be offered a job nearly 100 miles away from there.

As to web stature, again, not implying that no one in the state has internet coverage and everyone lives like the Amish. I am only going from two things: I'm having a hard time finding much in my field (outside the SW area of the state where I will not be able to work); coupled with her assertion that much more in CT is communicated via word of mouth over the internet. Is that bogus intel? I don't know, that's why I'm asking.

I'd love to be able to find some sort of compromise and live somewhere like Boston, Providence, or near Stamford perhaps, but as all of you must know, job offers don't come easy, in CT or anywhere else it seems these days. That's why she wants the job she's likely to get offered.

My biggest concern is that she'll get the job offer, I won't be able to find anything at all and refuse to move there on a whim and hope I can get something "through word of mouth", and it will cost me my relationship. Or I'll go anyway to support her, never find work, and end up bankrupt, unemployed, depressed, and bitter.

While it's kind of hard to rely on one place to get a job. Have to send in a resume and then it's a crap shoot.

Anyway, What town is actually getting the casino?

I think you're in a tough spot, agreed. I don't want to overstep my bounds as a random Internet person, but it sounds like there are deeper things at play here. She wants to move to the other side of the country for a job that "may" pay decently in 3-5 years? and wants you to uproot yourself with a solid career without even having a job there at all.. And living in an area that would be rather difficult to continue your career? And knowing you don't want to go?

It sounds like she misses her family and may be having second thoughts.. She has to know that as far as the two of you go, it is not the best plan.

I commend you for trying to work through it - this is a make or break situation for many couples and it doesn't sound like you guys want the same things. Consider if even the best case scenario plays out.. It doesn't sound like you want to be in CT either.

Those casinos are probably a long way off but I've seen advertising/marketing positions at Mohegan/Foxwoods if that works for the OP. Could always start in a less than perfect position there and apply when the mass ones come.

Yes, it will be awhile before the casinos are up and running. I was speaking more toward the angle of the PR needs of the suitors of those casino licenses that are coming up for grabs.

As far as Mohegan and Foxwoods, i didn't mention them because i felt that they're certainly headed toward contraction(layoffs) of their employee base.

Yes, it's bogus intel that businesses in CT use the Internet less than in other states like OR.

What do you do exactly? Art director? Print? Web? Video? I might be able to make some recommendations in the Hartford area.

If you wind up long term unemployed, bankrupt, depressed and bitter you may well lose the relationship anyway. If your fiance gets and takes the job, that's STILL no guarantee of long term stability. You've got a stool here, and so far not one of the legs is steady.

I'm shaken up because I read an article yesterday that was concerning.

Many Americans gave up hope last year

I picked my "target" destination based on the numbers - employment, demographics and cost of living. It has worked out so far. It could just as well have gone south, in which case I would be kicking myself. All I'm saying is that we make plans, and G*d laughs.
