The city received an $800,000 Federal Grant to study a streetcar system several months ago but the Board of Alderman refused to fund their portion of the study ($200,000). There is a renewed effort to get the Board to fund the rest of the study going on right now. It remains to be seen if it will get enough support. The estimated cost of the first phase of the system is $20 to $30 million which is a lot of money to just replace service already provided by buses. Here is a link to a recent article on the plan. But buses don't stimulate growth and are more expensive to run then streetcars..... Streetcars also last longer then buses.....20 to 30 Million for a 4 mile system is pretty cheap , so thats means my proposed system would only cost 600-800 Million?

oh really - well do you consider the green a place no outsider would go - considering yale is right there i should think lots of outsiders go there - there was a shooting in broad day light two stores off the green - you should try reading or watching the news sometime

OK, so one shooting and now everyone has to avoid the city because it's dangerous? Please. Incidents happen in any city.

If you compiled the crime stats for just the following neighborhoods, they would be drastically lower than what you see for the city as a whole: Downtown, Chapel West, East Rock, Yale Campus/Broadway, and Wooster Square. Those are the core commercial areas and, concurrently, the best residential areas (along with Westville). There's not a whole lot of reason to go anywhere else in the city as a visitor.

I walked across the Green three times today and I was fine.

Here are a few others:


Higher One HQ at Science Park- creation of a new headquarters for the Higher One company and renovation of factory units into housing and office space.

The Boathouse at Canal Dock- construction will begin soon on Long Wharf of a boathouse / marine exhibit and dock area for recreational kayak, canoes, and boat launching.

The Farmington Canal Linear Park- you can see the prep work done through most of downtown sub-street level. Once completed, this downtown linear park will increase food traffic in the surrounding streets during the summer time.

It looks like half that old factory is done, and it looks really good. The other half is still spooky Scooby Doo ghost town but hopefully will be renovated soon.
