Living near your job (in a neighborhood that at least has sidewalks, like Niantic) and driving to New Haven or Providence every so often might be a better option.
Keep in mind that the OP will likely be seeing their SO once or twice a week, whereas they will need to drive to work everyday.

Keep you eyes out for a small apartment in Mystic. Lot's of quaint little apartments in the area, short walk to downtown, with decent bars and restaurants for the evenings. It takes about 15 minutes to drive from there to the base, I did it for years. Of all the spots around the base that I lived, I think that was my favorite.

Thanks again for the additional info it is greatly appreciated. Based on the commute, train stops, what people have said here and my experience driving through the areas I have narrowed my search down to Mystic and Westerly. I have a target move in date for July 1, when would be a good time to start looking for an apartment and what would be the best way to search for an apartment since I will be in Philadelphia for the majority of the time. Thanks again everyone!

Perhaps you could try the Naval base resources to help find an apartment. Click on link

NSB New London Family Community Housing

There is also the New London Day which is the local paper which covers the Mystic area. Their biggest real estate section is on Fridays. They are online.

The corresponding Westerly paper is the daily Westerly Sun.

Also, you could try Craigslist ( eastern CT)

Or any of the online real estate sites such as zillow.com, trulia, com, realtor.com, homes.com, hotpads.com

Well i moved to Groton on Thursday. My initial take is that there is nothing happening from a night life stand point. I do like that i can walk to the gym/grocery store/misc shopping plaza. The selling point is the scenic aspect of the water...for now.

I am at a point in my life(couple months) where i want to focus on me so a "slow" life could be good. I just might have to check out providence one night.

For you, start looking and do you mean signing an apt lease, go for sometime in June.

Check out New Haven too. It's closer than Providence and has similar nightlife.
