Doubtful the tracks are in such bad shape in West of New Haven that its a ticking time bomb....thats a legit concern aswell. But if or when it comes out that the Railroad and State were told about the tracks , its going to point to neglect. Hopefully CT will get its act together and shut down the remain bad areas and get federal money to upgrade the entire system , otherwise expect more incidents like that. There are 4 Bridges in the state that need to be replaced...

We live in a time that any event will be analyzed from the terrorist perspective, for lack of a better word. Most of the time that perspective is discarded, but it is an unfortunate sign of the times.

I personally don't think this was deliberate.

Fortunately no one died in this incident, but there could be some problems in the actual trains. Just this week I was marveling the relative beauty of the new (at least they seem new to me) Metro North trains and it seems that this accident involves two of them.

Both Southbound and Northbound Exit 25s of I-95 were shut down. I got caught in traffic at Exit 5, and it was at walking speed till Exit 25. I ignored NYC Notify alerts, until Exit 14, and then I read the alert.

Please stop. This was the first train accident with passengers sustaining injuries since 1988. A truly remarkable statistic and much better than the state of NJ (it's not even close). Please go back to your urban planning "utopia".

I'm with Wilton. There are plenty of things that could have caused this, bad tracks being one of them. Let's wait and get some more info before we start pointing fingers.

Yes its the first major incident but there are minor derailments in the yards a few times a year and I was pointing out your stupid remarks on how common train accidents caused by reckless drivers and private companies makes New Jersey worse then CT... NJT/NJDOT have over 1200 miles of Trackages , 700+ have been fully upgraded...only a 30Mi of CDOT trackage has been upgraded....and it takes your state forever to upgrade something. There was also a wheel slip similar to this one in Park Ave tunnel 2 years ago , it wasn't as serious....but it did injure a few ppl. New Jersey Transit hasn't had anything bad since the 1980s similar to Metro North , same with the LIRR....However the last Major Derailment was to Amtrak in NJ on a bridge which serves as a warning to Connecticut if your state doesn't replace its failing bridges then the next derailment will be on a Bridge... In my Urban Planning utopia , all Infrastructure is up to Europe/Japanese/Australian Standards and not some 3rd world status quo crap.

Probably shouldn't compare us to the failing Europe experiment. Their model doesn't work. There have also been numerous accidents injuring train passengers since 1996 in NJ. Not as good as Connecticut unfortunately. Keep trolling.

Due to our country's cost structures, and political realities -- your Utopia has started to look more like a fantasy.

No country is perfect , but common accidents like Railroad Crossing collisions and Track and general infrastructure failures have been brought down from the 1990s level... Even Japan isn't perfect , but both networks have less incidents then our larger system they do run more trains then we do...so they should have more accidents and other issues but they do not. Combined all European Countries and Japan will spend about 680 billion on upgrades and expansions this year alone. Head on and Side swiping collisions are rare due to the higher track spacing and signal standards they have... Our Railroad Regulations haven't been changed since the 1950s... Same with our Road Designs and Air Traffic control systems...everything in this country lags behind and its catching up in a painful way...more will come and it will be deadly...we've been lucky.

Re: Political Realities --> More due to 'lack of will' and an extreme need in this country to brainwash people with polarizing crap rather than try to work together to common sense solutions.
