Connecticut has pretty much always been proactive with minimum wages. We are usually well above the Federal level and usually one of the first to increase. Historically, the minimu wage is significantly lower than it was in the past when adjusted for inflations. Quite frankly, our major corporations have taken advantage of its workers for the past ten years with the policies implemented under the Bush administration and then the excuses used during the last downturn in the economy. In general most major companies are sitting on likes of cash and not doing anything to help the economy. Not that this is a reason but it is time they gave a little back to the country. JMHO, Jay

Get ready for longer lines at the checkout counters... if the stores can even stay open. A growing number of people in my area depend on having a Stop & Shop within walking because we can't afford to drive and age and medical problems make it impossible to walk to the next closest grocery store. If they close this store we're really screwed. You may think you're helping us by raising the minimum wage but really, it's the exact opposite.

These idiot politicians fail to see the larger picture, aside from the minimum wage being high they fail to see the ripple effect if causes. If the minimum wage people are making what it used to take them a couple years to make, now the semi-skilled people who worked their way up are pissed because the new unskilled people now make what they do, and it will continue that way up the chain. The larger issue is the people who are actually skilled being payed like like crap, while the company utilizes their skill.

Last I checked companies aren't having profitability issues...

There has to be balance.

Which companies? Retailers are failing all over the place. Vacant storefronts abound. Profitability is a problem for nearly all small businesses right now and many larger ones as well.

Public companies have widely reported record profits and the stock market continues to move through record territory. Since mom and pops don't have to report, and 90% of small businesses fail in a good economy, I'm going to go with the statistical over the anecdotal.

$5.75 per day net is most likely pre tax $8, or half an hour of pay.

Assuming this is full-time, 5-6k gas net is 8k gross, or 25% of annual gross wages (10 hrs week).

So your commute, without factoring car depreciation, amounts to 10.5 hours per 40 hour week.
