Gonna bump this thread since it's not all that old and still relevant. Gas has gone up since this winter although a barrel of oil is going for ~$47, just 5 dollars more than it was in the winter when gas was at its all time low. Average gas in Fairfield right now is 2.85. I've gotta question though, why is gas so much more expensive in CT? I was just in New Jersey and saw regular go for 2.50. I've never pulled into a station so fast.

There are a couple of reasons gas is higher here. We have no oil refineries which mean that gasoline must be transported into our state from another one. That adds to the price. Also our gas tax is higher. We abolished tolls back in the 80's and to pay for that the state enacted a higher tax on gas. Combine those and you have one of the highest prices for gasoline in the country. Jay

What you said is true, but I do think it's bogus that it's a good 20-30 cents higher in Fairfield County, and even 60-70 cents higher on the gold coast. Several stations in Greenwich are 3.29 while most in metro Hartford are 2.59-2.69. Same taxes, and if anything, less travel from refineries (assuming it's coming from Jersey)

Oil continues to slump and the change to the winter blend will happen in a few months. We may see it dip under $2 again for a bit

You also have to consider the cost of real estate in the town the station is in. Greenwich is one of the priciest towns in the country so that gas station is probably paying a big premium for its location. That cost is being passed on to the consumer as well. This is true even in New Jersey. You will pay more for gas in a town like Ridgewood than in a station on say Route 46. Jay

CT has the second highest .. after Hawaii.. gas tax in the nation.... which does have an effect on price of course....@.50 per gallon compared lets say SC where its at present .06 per gallon....and amongst the lowest price usually ....as per gas in Greenwich and its surrounds .... the price of the real estate used as gas stations .. Im sure you are aware of .. has a major effect on the price of gas, nor are there a lot of stations in town given its population. Theres a reason there are no discount retailers in the area.... closest being in Norwalk or Fairfield...
