They can't do that if the union doesn't agree to open the retirement agreement that goes till 2022. No one in their right mind would agree to what you say and they've already told us we'll take layoffs over any changes to the retirement or medical plan.

Isn't 45,700 all of the state of CT employees ? I thought state employment was around 50,000.

Amen. It would have been easy to switch employees with say 10 or less years to a 401K when he issued 6,000 layoffs in exchange for rescinding say 4,000 layoffs. Instead he gave up the 6k layoffs for no savings. (Put to a vote the unions would IMO have taken that trade. The key being it would have been needed to let people actually sit unemployed for a month or 2first to sink in.)

Then let the layoffs begin. Thousands of them. My hunch is within weeks you'd see a union change of heart as they fielded angry calls from ex members.

Be the best option instead of shorting staff and making them do overtime

The union's position (what they've told me) is go ahead and lay us off. If your boss said "I won't lay you off if you give up your social security at age 66" would anyone do that? It WILL get interesting.

You won't get any sympathy or empathy here unfortunately. I have always found it strange that nearly every year the state Govt and sometimes local Govt try to balance their budgets on the backs of employees. I actually heard a random person today in the dept store talking on the phone and complaining about state employees salaries and the state budget.

There is a lot of jealousy and resentment out there. Public sector unions are the last labor stronghold the "people in power" haven't been able to divide and conquer yet. They are working diligently on it and someday will probably win. Then we can have prison guards working for $10 an hour.

I was being sarcastic. I think CO's start at 35-38k and AFTER they pass training they get a raise to 38-40k. CT was on a hiring spree last year I think for CO's. There is a lot of potential for overtime in that job though. Given that I still think that salary is too low for guards.

There was a rumor that a friend said wasn't entirely true. They had 500 COs retire. They put through 3 to 4 classes and the fifth class was canceled, one my friend was in.
