Possible job in Suffield, looking at options on where to live.
Single, late 30's. Budget max $1200/month.
What towns/complexes would be good for me to look at? Looking for the shortest commute possible.

Thanks!

If it were me, the first strategy I would look into would be to purchase an entry-level single-family home in a nearby town with good schools. Small, well maintained, low maintenance. A mortgage payment would be within your price range if you can get financing, and it's always worth trying. For instance, go search on Zillow for homes under $200k in East Granby (away from the airport), Granby, Simsbury, and South Windsor. The commute would be manageable although not "shortest possible." For that, Suffield would be the answer, but I don't know if Suffield resale would move as quickly as the other towns.

Suffield is a small semi rural town. There are not a lot of apartment complexes there. You can search apartments.com for what is there. If you want a bigger town with more options, check out Enfield which is just across the river. You might even find something in Windsor Locks. Jay

Since you don't have kids to worry about, Enfield and Windsor are going to give you some good options and a relatively short commute. I know somebody that works in Windsor and commutes from Suffield and her drive is usually less than 20 minutes each way.

The thing about Windsor is that though it has a lot of jobs and employers, surprisingly it does not have a lot of apartments. Most of the many workers in Windsor live in Manchester or West Hartford. Jay

Nico is right. Mortgage rates are still historically low. Housing market in CT has not recovered as well as say Boston area, so you can still buy a house and have the property taxes and the mortgage be within your rent payment. Try for a 3 bedroom - 2 bedrooms are a very tough resale.

Alternatively, you could rent for a year and familiarize yourself with the area, and then buy.

One of the best things about owning your own house (and in that area, the lots are big), is the peace and quiet you get vs living in an apartment.

Massachusetts was a good suggestion. Southwick is a lovely, small town just north of the border and has the lakes and pretty good shopping - I recall a Big Y there and gas is cheaper in Mass.

You can buy a three bedroom one bath home on 1/4 of acre in a very safe area for less than $ 150,000, and taxes would be less than $ 3600 a year. City water , city sewer, trash pickup included. It may need updates , but mostly all minor or TLC. Dozens of those homes available in the area. Even less for a fix it up.
10- 15 minutes from the center of Suffield

What town(s) would I find these houses that fit this scenario?
