2024 Tournament Announcement:
Hey Everyone,
Just wanted to give you a huge update and announcement about the next Tournament in 2024, which is less than 6 months away!!! How time goes so fast, LOL!
As I have stated before, this will be the TEN YEAR Anniversary of when I first launched this back in 2014, so something really special needs to be done this time for the 2024 Tournament! I was thinking about a format change, and how we could do this differently. There have been a number of suggestions as to ranked choice, but that would honestly be way too confusing for me to figure out, etc, and I feel it wouldn't be as fun in the long run, as people are very competitive on here and really love to see what happens!
That being said, we are going to make this Tournament even bigger in 2024, and will do something very special that will honestly give a lot more of an accurate representation of where each town stands among voters, and we can guarantee that the winner, second place, and third place will fully deserve to be there in the New Format!!! This New Addition will also give a much better idea of where the mid-table towns stand amongst each other. In the past, it was always easy to know the Top 16-20 towns, but after that, it was a lot harder to really know 100% where the 3-5 tier towns stand and how they rank. This was mainly because we do not know how for example towns like Deep River vs Colchester would rank against each other because they'd be out to more seeded towns earlier, etc.
So before I announce, can anyone guess what the New Format / Addition is going to be? (Read Below)
DOUBLE ELIMINATION!!!!!!!
Yeah that is Right!!! We are going to make this Tournament a Double-Elimination Tournament! Which basically means that towns will have to be eliminated TWICE before they are considered out of the tournament. Therefore, there will be a losers bracket where every town eliminated will have a second chance, and once a town is eliminated twice, they are out. This will greatly be beneficial and avoid towns being eliminated too early because of tough draws, etc. There will also be NO small group brackets to start with like there were in the past. It'll be ONE HUGE Bracket of 169 towns from the start, which will contain a WINNERS and LOSERS Bracket.
Now one thing I am still figuring out in debating is whether there will even be a clear / fixed bracket from the start of the tournament. One other option would be to start out seeding the towns be coefficient, but the towns that they will fixed next will depend on the vote difference they won the previous round by. So therefore let's say these were the following results of a previous round: (I am using the Round of 16 results of the last tournament for example)
West Hartford 4-15 Milford (+11)
Branford 12 -8 East Lyme (+4)
Fairfield 10-10 New Haven (6-7) (+0/1)
Ridgefield 3-17 Stonington (+14)
Norwalk 9-11 Essex (+2)
Litchfield 8-12 Guilford (+4)
Westport 7-12 Madison (+5)
Glastonbury 3-16 Old Saybrook (+13)
So in this case the quarterfinals would be: Stonington vs New Haven, Old Saybrook vs Essex, Milford vs Branford, and Madison vs Guilford. Because the winner with the largest vote difference is paired with the smallest and so fourth. We MIGHT do it this way, or we might just have a clear bracket from the start with towns seeded by coefficient. This is something that I am still thinking about. Feel Free to let me know if you'd prefer one option or the other for that, and I'll happily take your feedback into consideration!
Start Date: Tuesday, March 5 2024! (If you remember, we usually start this in April, but since this will be a double elimination tournament, we will have a few extra rounds added. Therefore, we will start a month earlier, because I'd like to try and have this tournament finished by June 14).
So Mark Your Calendars for Tuesday, March 5 2024!!! Who's Excited?

This is nothing short of incredible. Absolutely amazing. The OG.
Do you use some sort of optimization software or just your own spreadsheet?
I feel like I might have helped pump up Norwalk in the last tournament, but this one I need to work on getting Darien and New Canaan out of the first rounds. Those are pitiful rankings. It's a tall order because I understand everyone hates them here, I get it.

Steve, you won't believe how many hours I have spent trying to figure this all out. I don't use any software at all. In fact today, I have actually been debating myself whether all tournaments should count equally or the most recent tournaments should have slightly more weight when deciding the coefficients. After a lot of thought, I have came to the conclusion that towns definitely slightly change within a few years and therefore while performance in all the previous tournaments needs to count, the more recent ones should have a little more say in the coefficients. Therefore, the later the tournament has happened, the more weight and emphasis it has on the coefficients and ranks of the towns.
I am just doing some slight touch ups and making sure everything is accurate and I will have the exact 169 towns posted and ranked here very soon. Likely within 30-60 min from now. Stay Tuned. This is very beneficial to how the seeding will work for the next tournament!

On another note, I will say that I feel like Darien as a town is improving a little bit. I have not spent that much time there recently, but with more NYC residents moving to CT, and the towns developing more and more, I feel like Darien has become less snobby over the past couple years, and while its still likely the second most upscale town in the state, I feel it is not as snobby or ritzy as it used to be. There is a higher demand of people moving out to that area, and the demand of residents moving to those towns is increasing. I am starting to have some more appreciation for Darien and what it has to offer compared to how I previously used to view the town.
