Where is the best place (financially) for a single gal to move so to commute to Manhattan for work. I am looking for a hip town and to live in an apt. I know Connecticut is expensive so where is there a place where the neighborhood is still good and decent in rents?

The area of CT within commuting distance to NYC is among the priciest areas in the nation. I'm not sure where you're moving from or what your price range is, but generally the most affordable decent area is Bridgeport's Black Rock section. Bridgeport has a poor reputation and to some degree it has earned that reputation, but there are still some parts of the city with decent neighborhoods. You can also check out Norwalk or Stratford. Generally the closer you get to NYC, the higher the cost of living. Anything within 60 minutes of Manhattan will be pricey.

Taxes in CT are cheaper than the rest of the tri state area (NY, NJ) but home prices and rents can be stratospheric in many Fairfield County towns.

If you can provide a little more info, we can help you better.

I originally lived in Brooklyn for many years. I have been living in Phoenix, Arizona since 2002. I work as a legal secretary and I can pay up to $1400 for an apt. I was paying $1,100 in Brooklyn for a 2 bedroom rental in a private house. I have only driven through Connecticut in my youth and I've always thought it was a very beautiful state. Right now I am doing research for the future. Connecticut is one of my options. I wasn't sure about the neigborhoods and if they are all pricey.

Hip in southern CT, without paying through the roof on rent? Nowhere. Connecticut is pretty, but nowhere really close to NYC is good for young people- it's really expensive and family-esque. Stratford is a horribly ugly town and Bridgeport is dangerous, Norwalk is quite nice but not sure about prices or closeness to NYC. Hope that helps some- it's really a tough situation.

PhxGal07, I think Milford is affordable.

Forget it if you're driving to Manhattan. Not sure about the train ride.

train from Milford to Grand Central is at the shortest 88 minutes. I never understood why people would spend nearly 3 hours a day commuting. My commute is about 7 minutes, milford to milford!

If you are a legal secretary, there are lots of law firms in Connecticut...

Good luck!

There is NOTHING 'hip" about Fairfield County....

Even SoNo is a virtual ghetto.

Really? Sounds like you need to get out more.

Downtown Stamford is incredibly popular with young professionals given its walkable downtown with lots of bars. SoNo is hip as well, to a lesser degree in my opinion. Right in SoNo (not the surrounding area) is anything but ghetto. It's very yuppie, actually. All of these areas offer cab services and Metro North.

There are also several areas in Danbury that I'd call "hip" especially downtown now that WestConn's housing has expanded. Students can walk to bars, restaurants, clubs, etc.

That's pretty hip to me.

So Stratford is a "horribly ugly town" yet Norwalk is "quite nice." lol, I love it.
