Tragic story, but I think there is too much criticism of letting a 16-year-old drive. They were on the Interstate, where everyone is going the same direction and the oncoming traffic is on the other side of the median. How else is someone going to get experience driving at night, in the rain, etc. ?

Some other time than late at night when you haven't been driving for hours already!

If you want your kid to learn, maybe give him the day shift?

They let their 16 year old drive? Did he even have a learner's permit much less a full license? Good grief

And no seat belts is beyond stupid. How can people in this day and age not wear seatbelts? Absolute nobody gets in my car unless they wear a seatbelt. That's like safety 101, the very basics.

Gosh, this is horrible. If you are that kid, how do you ever get over this? Why would they let a 16 year old drive long distances at night? Anytime someone that young is behind the wheel he/she needs to be under constant supervision. The fact that he fell asleep means he obviously wasn't being actively supervised.

When I was in EMT training, a seasoned old paramedic told our class " I have scraped many people off the road, but I have never unbuckled a corpse." That was good enough for me. The car does not move until everyone has their seatbelt on.

I hope the extended family can take the survivors in. This is a terrible tragedy for those that died, as well as the survivors.
May they all find peace.

Oh well, a lot of times bad choices go unnoticed but sometimes they lead to tragic consequences.

Did you read the story ? Kind of proves your theory wrong doesn't it. There is a time and place for learning and this wasn't the time.

Another example of a younger driver and a tragic accident. And from what I've read, he actually did have some seat time behind the wheel.

Thus is really the only relevant thing. Accidents will happen, whether your fault or not. A tire blowout, a truck driver having a heart attack, an inexperienced driver at the wheel. But if you're not wearing a seatbelt.....

If you are indifferent to your safety then it will likely bite you in the arse at some point.
