I hope the extended family can take the survivors in. This is a terrible tragedy for those that died, as well as the survivors.
May they all find peace.

I've had someone get out the car when I told them we weren't going anywhere until he put his seatbelt on.

One cause of seat-belted driver death or severe injury is an un-belted passenger flying forward from the backseat when a front collision occurs. That passengers head hits your head like a bowling ball travelling very fast.

Exactly!
I think this story also made the cut because it serves as several convenient cautionary tales.
But why are so many people posting here not comprehending the fact that both parents, in fact EVERYONE, was killed except for the kid who was belted and driving? Over and over there's mention of "the survivors" or of the parent who lived.

They were both teachers, I would think they would be more responsible. Safety first etc. I cannot sleep if someone else is driving. Mostly to keep the driver alert.

Nothing wrong with a young man driving at 16 around the neighborhood, but you can't expect a young kid to do a man's job, driving for that long in unchartered territory at all hours of the night is truly insane and irresponsible on the parents.Such a sad story and poor decision, very sad. May God bless the family and may they have Blue Skies forever more..

There were three survivors. The kid driving and two siblings. One of whom was critically injured. Thus the mention of the survivors.

The SUV was obviously overloaded and as a high centered vehicle with an inexperienced driver who is much more prone to overcorrect this was a recipe for disaster.

Just like all the extended 15 passenger van crashes that we read about all the time (seemingly almost always linked to a church of some sort, or athletic team) another vehicle that when loaded up will roll if you sneeze on it and I wouldn't get in with anyone but a professional driver, even though a regular drivers license will suffice its legal operation.

Such a sad, but easily avoidable tragedy.

Agreed. Eight people, plus presumably all their luggage + inexperienced and TIRED driver+ no seatbelts.

Yes, vehicles with a high center of gravity are very easy to roll over.

I'm sure if this kid would have been driving a Corvette in the same situation, it wouldn't have rolled, he would have just skidded off the road.

This story is absolutely horrible and the thing is it all could have been prevented!!! RIP and I hope he gets the counseling he needs because he is going to need it if he doesn't end up taking his life first
