A Michigan pediatrician declined to treat the infant daughter of a lesbian couple in yet another example of the growing tensions between advocates for LGBT rights and those who want greater religious expression protections.
First, refusing to provide medical treatment is not religious expression. If someone shows up with an injury caused by their own negligence (say, a car accident while driving intoxicated), they get treatment. Prisons treat incarcerated murderers who are sick. Military physicians treat enemy personnel who are wounded and then captured. It's bigotry, with a religious excuse. Period.
Second, by what logic - even if a physician feels compelled to discriminate against gays - does one then refuse treatment to a helpless baby?
Third, while perfectly legal in Michigan, this act is morally reprehensible - but there's no shortage of people who will be falling all over themselves to excuse the shameful behavior of this physician because for some people, as long as discrimination is done in the name of religion (so long as it's done in the name of a religion they like, that is), it must be rationalized and justified and excused.
She just passed off the patient to another doctor. I'm sure that happens often, for many reasons, in multi doctor practices.
If she was the only doctor, and it was an emergency she should HAVE to treat the baby.
I wish the religion of the doctor would have been mentioned. I wonder what religion would approve of the action even if they disapproved of the parents lifestyle. The whole hate the sin love the sinner thing.

This couple didn't go to the Doctors church and ask for medical attention, they went to the doctors office. What religious belief says not to treat the child of a "sinner"?
The way things are going anyone will be able to claim anything is a religious belief to do whatever they want.

Yeah. There was another doctor available. The baby was attended to by a qualified doctor.
As the headline says, there is nothing illegal about it. But the headline implies there ought to be. I disagree because this was not an emergency case. In the ER all restrictions are off - rich, poor, gay, child molester, cop, Martian, whatever; treat them all.
What does any baby have to do with the parents like in this case? A baby can't help who its parents are and shouldn't be treated for what they are or what they do.
I wonder if this Doctor would refuse to treat the baby if it were born to a mother addicted to heroine or crack?
Many people are opposed to people who do hard drugs. What if the mother had aides and the baby picked it up on the way out? What if the father of the baby was a bisexual and gave aides to the mother?
This poor baby being judged by the doctor for who its parents are. It is pretty sad however... How many doctors pass of patients due to the fact they don't want to deal with the patients self destructive behaviour? I'm sure it happens all the time and we don't hear about it.
