I'm surprised they're still going to be in print, whereas something like Golf Magazine, which caters to a crowd that has a fair number of readers who presumably prefers print stuff, went digital only last year.

Back in college, my roommates got a free trial to Playboy. When notified that their trial would end, they opted out of subscribing. It was nice while it lasted, but something they wanted to pay into. It would be 7 months later before the trial finally stopped for good!

I have not looked at a Playboy magazine in at least a quarter century. There is no need to buy porn magazines when you can watch an online porno. I am surprised it took this long to make a change. I know Playboy sales has been down for many years. To spark sales, I actually think PB should keep the pictures but add more articles, like those articles found in GQ and Men's health.

The magazine business is dying and will soon be a thing of the past. Just a last ditch effort to keep the money rolling in at PB.

The world has moved to the web. And much of the web has moved to social media sites, nearly all of which ban nudity, just as so many work-based web browsers do. You can't make money off customers who can't see your product.

Maxim has been catching up with Playboy without any nudity at all, although it's more juvenile than even Playboy is.
I don't know that young people really know that, they seem to think it's a joke as you say, but I do remember it as a legit magazine in terms of the quality of interviews and other articles. Many were iconic, like the Jimmy Carter "sin in my heart" interview. Like Barbara Walters, somehow Playboy got more out of there subjects than they even intended. I think at one point, they interviewed Marge Simpson. The intrigue was thinking of an animated TV show character as a sex symbol, which no1 has ever really done. For good reason too, as The Simpsons were still suitable for a teen audience.
