I would do this immediately, before the media reports where the winning ticket was sold. This will let me know who my friends really are. When I collect my winnings several weeks later and everyone finds out I'm the winner (and it almost inevitably will come out) I will know who I can give money to, and it will be so much fun to throw it back in the faces of the people who wouldn't lend me a few bucks, and tell them to **** off if they ask for money.
Lovely attitude.

It is a much better attitude than that possessed by those who believe that they are entitled to some portion of the winnings just because they are a friend or a relative.

It's cheap entertainment (assuming you only spent $10 on tickets), a cheap escape to dream what you can do with that kind of money. I spent about $40 on tickets since the powerball jackpot really started getting huge, usually I spend less than $20 on lottery tickets in a typical month.
No one is thinking about it as an investment, really. It's about as much of an investment as a cup of coffee is an investment -- and makes you feel good for about as long. :-) It's entertainment, pure and simple. Buy a dream for a couple of dollars. No one ever believes that they are going to win, even though we imagine what it might be like.

I tried to change the title of this thread but it's too late to edit.
Doesn't matter. We all know the jackpot will be over $1 billion.

Can you still donate half of your income for the year to a non-profit without being taxed on that amount? Say to a state university?

That reporter kinda ticked me off. "Not the answer we're looking for"? Well, why not just write him a script so he can give the "right" answer and you can continue to live in your fairy tale whitewashed world?
