The flight attendants main function is passenger safety and securing the cabin for the safety of the flight, isn't it? If everything's going well in those respects you get a meal during the flight. If the cabin is unsafe (turbulence) you may not get a meal at all. It's best to grab something in the airport and take it on the plane, just in case.
