If you're in MY establishment, yes, you walk away from a "deadly soda attack" and call the police. You don't go ghetto on a customer just because you're covered in sweet syrup... and you're pissed. If you can't handle that non-violent approach, seek employment elsewhere... and maybe some mental health counseling as well.
So, if your employees are "assaulted" by one of your customer, that is fine to you?
Not every employee would react as passive as you want them to react. If you throw a cup of coffee to my face, don't expect kisses and roses from me.

I would walk out and call the police. The job is not worth getting into a physical fight and risking injuries.

Passive? Kisses and roses?

Naw.

Civilized. In other words, handling things with dignity and self-control... like adults who aren't gangsta and ghetto raised.

"...laying the smack down on someone..."

Neither of you would be working for me anyway, so....

So what if the customer was temporarily emboldened to destroy stuff? McDonald's has insurance. If a customer attacks, defend yourself. But that's not what happened as far as I can tell. I see the customer having a hissy fit, throwing things around and screaming. The tray didn't get thrown until Big Bertha charged her like a mad bull. I'd have thrown the tray too if I saw that pissed off Thing stormin' towards me.
No, it would be better to run

Uh huh, I'll bet you've NEVER been in such a situation so you actually have no idea what you'd do. You may stand up for yourself or you may run for mommy. Until you're in the situation that those employees were in where you are assaulted multiple times by a "customer" you are in NO position to judge. I'm all for calling the cops, deescalating and all that but once an assault happens, sorry it's defend myself time.

Hell, by the time the cops get there odds are the "customer" would be long gone only to act up like this again or, she'd be caught and get a ticket only to do it again. Butt whooping means she's not likely to do THAT again, at least at that place.

On another part, weird calling someone who's stealing a "customer" isn't it???

That horrible customer could still sue McDonald's and win. Even though she was initially the aggressor, the employees only retaliation should have been to call the cops and have her arrested for petty assault. The employee was big enough to have restrained the customer and thrown her out. But because they hit her back repeatedly, not once, but over and over again they now become the aggressors being employees of a business. It went from self defense to a clear case of excessive force and brutality by the McD worker and co worker.
Have you ever tried to restrain someone wildly swinging? Ever watch cops restrain someone? Often it comes to blows or wrestling to get someone in a restrained position, then you need cuffs, and they are trained for that.

And when they follow you, continuing to hit you with a tray and whatever else they can grt their hands on, what then? You'll just stand outside waiting for the police while someone pounds on you?

Anyways, you throw stuff at and assault someone, expect a response.

Woman tries to steal soda.

Employee shuts down soda machine.

Argument ensues.

Woman throws a fry at employee.

Woman throws a milk shake at employee.

Woman hits employee on head with a tray.

Employee charges at the woman, grabs her hair and punches her.

Sounds to me like the woman was lucky the employee did not use a gun to defend herself.
