I guess every journalist has to work with the info they gather at the moment.
Not sure what's so confusing about his dog "returning home". The fact was established and confirmed by all news sources.
It was a new dog (seems to be a dachshund) he and his roommate got just that evening.
Actually that is confusing if they'd just gotten the dog. How would the dog know where to return to?
I think that the main conclusion that we can reach is that in the early days of a missing person situation like this, there are few real FACTS that we can count on as being true. Nearly EVERYTHING is simply someone's belief, opinion, or perspective of what happened. It may be months, years, or never when we learn all the facts of the case.
The number of people that go missing in State/Federal parks, on hunting/camping/fishing trips with friends is staggering. This guy Dave Paulides has a YT channel dedicated to it. Looks like he already has a video on Caleb. The 18 year old in Indiana might have fallen out of kayak.

Didn’t they say at the beginning that Caleb brought the dog home after a walk? Then stepped out and go missing?
You link indicates that the dog returned, but not Caleb?
Those are 2 different scenarios. Which is it?
The journalists should try to do better
The drunk kid in Nashville that disappeared.. They've found his bank card 'near' the Cumberland river.
Someone spiked his drink. It's becoming super common in these hipster bar zones. The perps even coordinate with a driver outside pretending to be an uber (hell they could be abd just be off duty).

I did hear that drink spiking has become more mainstream, but I hadn't heard about the uber/lyft collaboration. That is scary af.

His disappearance is so strange. His bank card was found by a couple of Tik Tokers who were searching the river bank for clues and those young ladies reported the find to the police.
