Obviously, I"m not talking about sweet & sour chicken, but I"m also not talking about authentic fancy chinese restaurants. I'm asking more about the 'hole-in-the-wall chinese restaurants that serve a bit of everything. You know, the ones that you see in Asia with bad service, have an open kitchen, and get the food out really quick, really cheap, and serve a bit of everything (boba tea, rice, bbq, spicy noodle soup etc). Bad service is not required, but I'm just trying to describe as best as I can.

Are there any of those in the dallas area?

Check in the Richardson area first (as well as maybe parts of Plano), and our local Richardson denizens will likely point some out. The general answer is that Dallas has very few of these relative to most other large cities, unfortunately.

Not sure why the website only shows an Austin location. Here are the ones around DFW.

Chinese doesn't seem to be as big here in Dallas compared to other cities we've lived in (Boston, Atlanta). But we have found a few places to get our fix. Love the dim sum at Kirin Court and Maxim's in Richardson. If you go, weekends definitely have the most variety and the carts wheezing by with the offerings. During the week you have to order from the dim sum menu. The only advantage to putting up with the weekday system is that, at least at Maxim's, all the dim sum offerings are $2.99 per item, regardless of the size.

We also like the food court eateries inside both HMarts (Carrollton, Plano). I will also happily trek to Ranch 99 and eat at the cafe there when I am having Chinese food withdrawal. In terms of actual Chinese restaurants we love First Chinese BBQ in Richardson.

Give me a good hole in the wall Chinese eatery over Royal China any day!

Greenville Ave between Belt Line & Arapaho in Richardson, or anywhere in old "downtown" Richardson really (the area around Main St/Belt Line between 75 and Greenville). Also Kirin Court at 75 right south of Belt Line.

Sounds like you are describing this place Taiwan Cafe - Plano, TX | Yelp

I am not sure why you are actively looking for restaurants like that, maybe for nostalgia sake? Restaurants only have 3 criteria. Food, Service, Price and imo you can only excel at 2 out of the 3 categories or else you can't stay in business for long. So far I haven't found a hole-in-the-wall type of asian restaurants in Dallas that gets A+ in both food and price like in other big cities. If anybody has one in mind let me know

I like Mr Wok on 14th at Jupiter in East Plano. It's in an old Pizza Hut. :-)

First Chinese bbq in richardson.
Check out the yelp reviews for that one.
It's spot on.
I LOVE their cheap
Food, but hate their rude service.

Complete with ducks hanging. Crabby ass waitresses. Small. Menus that are hard to read.
Just point to the Asian people and what's at their table!!!!

You pay cash only. They don't have time to deal with cards.
