Here is some detail on the project. I agree that it was long overdue, but I'm very excited for it to get up and running. I think if you want your downtown to be a major business center, you need to be able to get people there from the airport via mass transit.

East Rail Line

Completion isn't expected until 2016

Sorry I wasn't clear-not enough sleep...

Thanks for the information. I'm glad that Denver is at least trying to do something in regards to mass transit.

Are they going to build something in the Tech Center area? Maybe from Downtown to DTC?

The southeast light rail lines (Routes E/F/H) have run between the DTC and downtown since 2006.

Really? I cannot wait to see how much Denver has grown...

I guess for me Denver isn't missing a thing.

Here is a map of the system. Light blue indicates existing, although the West Line should be in light blue too since it just went live in April.

RTD

It's a very highly regarded light rail system nationally.

Construction is well underway on the line to DIA. They're building the station and hotel on the south end of the main terminal of DIA, you can see the new bridge over Pena Blvd. for the train, and they've been laying track. In my neighborhood (Stapleton) I can see the progress of bridges that have been built and I think track has been laid as well. The new station at Stapleton hasn't broken ground yet.

You can also see the LR construction along the 225 construction zone. The line that's in the middle of the freeway will go up and over the freeway (you can already seen the construction of this south of Iliff) and will run along the east side of the freeway.

The construction at Santa Fe has nothing to do with light rail to DIA (not sure why you thought it would). The construction at Santa Fe will hopefully relieve the complete mess that interchange has been for years.

The construction along US 36 is to bring bus rapid transit in place of the delayed light rail. Thus, US 36 is currently a narrow mess.

The US36 Bus Rapid Transit is not in lieu of the delayed Northwest Line (which is commuter rail, not light rail), but was always envisioned. The Northwest communities could not decide on the two technologies: BRT or rail, and opted for both. This is in contrast to the other corridors where one technology was chosen. But Boulder wanted it both ways, RTD went along with it because they needed the areas votes for FasTracks, and now the economics are winning out for what was the logical choice for the corridor: BRT.

If/when the NW corridor is completed, I think that people will be surprised at how lousy the train service will be compared with the BRT. The train is probably doable up to Broomfield and is competitive with BRT. It's the route after that where the problems really start to pop up.

Excellent post.
When we voted on this in 2004?, I was saying why don't we do one mode, but do it right.
A true BRT. Instead we are getting BRT Lite and our grandkids MIGHT get slow, heavy rail.
