Amen to that.
This picture is from March 2003. This was wet, drenchingly heavy snow.
That snowstorm brought a huge elm branch down onto our neighbor's car.
Another neighbor had their roof cave in.
I agree that shoveling is great exercise, a shovel is all I ever used, but those spring storms can be challenging.

Agree on the heavy spring snow....I was mainly just reacting to Cupcakes seemingly horrified reaction that people would actually use ....shovels! Yes, there are times when a snow blower would be nice (winter of 2006-2007 for instance). But typically for most regular snow here on regular urban or suburban lots, a snowblower is not necessary to use most of the time and people DO actually manage to survive without one. A number of years ago we had a big wet spring snow and we had neighbors who prided themselves in having the nicest cars, nicest lawn - only the best of everything....this big spring snow comes up and we get out and start shoveling. Neighbor (about 30 y.o and in good health and physical ability) waits then brings out this (I'm guessing underpowered) snow blower/pusher whatever - by the time he got the thing working and the snow from being clumped up in the works, we had been done for quite some time. Might have been the same year that we had a spring blizzard and the guy across the street who had a Hummer, got out of his driveway a whopping 2 hours before I got out in my non 4wd car....not every extreme always needs a bunch of fancy tools. Obviously if a person has health or age issues or has an unusually long driveway those can really make a lot of sense though.

Shovels? Over here in GJ, shovels are rarely needed. Most of the time a broom does the job quite well because most of the snowfall is in the range of one to three inches. The spring storms that cover the Front Range with heavy wet snow are usually little more than a few drops of rain over here. Back on December 8th however, a snow blower would have been nice to have for clearing away 10 inches of the white stuff. That snowfall was one of the few times I had to use a shovel instead of a broom.

Mine has a bad back and if I don't beat him to the shoveling, he ends up hurting the next day. Also it is a great workout so I don't mind it.

I think the women shovel often because they tend to be home more often....(obviously not always). At our house with 3 able bodies (and one of those is a teenager) there really isn't too much of an excuse for not shoveling.

My husband only needed a broom as well with a couple snows we had earlier. We are lucky though that our driveway faces southwest.

Only problem is, if it gets driven over (by our son when he leaves for school so early) it will get packed down and icy if ignored.
