Believe it or not there are a number of horse barns in Southfield. It used to be considered the country way back when so that's why. I specifically remember seeing horses at houses along 11 Mile near the Farmington Hills border.

To be honest it's going to be hard to find the type of house with the yard size you desire and also be within 15-20 minutes of good restaurants. Most of the houses in the area are in subs with smaller lots.

Of the top of my head I'm thinking maybe the north Rochester Hills area/Oakland Twp?? You'd at least be near downtown Rochester which isn't exactly happening but not too small or dull either, and you can find some, again, formerly country areas, like the north Livernois Road neighborhoods, where you can get a bigger yard. That would be a trek for your husband, though.

We made a day trip to Detroit, an exhausting 850 mile adventure that took 17 hours. We actually were able to connect with a Realtor of the Grosse Pointe area who showed us the neighborhoods and three homes for sale. We were delighted and excited to see what was on the other side of I94 and the hugely depressing ghettos. We understand a bit more what seems to be happening with Detroit and we are actually excited to move there. Maybe in some small way we can help someone while we enjoy the amazing nuggets of culture and beauty in the area. Thank you all....

I forgot to mention we visited a horse facility (found on Craigslist) up in Ray township that will be great for us. Surprisingly, a few of their boarders actually live in Grosse Pointe! Yes, the yards are small and unfortunately we will probably have to find a new home for our Boxer/Great Dane mix that we fostered last year. We have a min pin and another small mixed breed that will be ok with a tiny yard.
Again, thank you all....

Try Groose Pointe. Houses there are going for very low prices. It has good school district and there is the Grosse Pointe Hunt Club for your horses.

(Though I much prefer to live on the Gold Coast in Detroit, along Jefferson Avenue and the water)

I think there is a horse farm in Northville I past but I am not positive. That has a cute downtown that has restaurants and I am sure bike paths. I like Birmingham which has similar but the feel to me is cuter. I am not sure how close a horse farm is there. There are so many fitness centers in MI so that should not be to big of an issue.

Notice how no one is recommending living within Detroit proper? Take note of that.

I don't know if anyone here is familiar with this website.

Driving Detroit - A Freep.com special series

Its a website that has a map where these guys based on driving every street in Detroit mapped out the entire city into five categories: well-maintained areas, new construction, mixed (well-maintained and abandonment), much abandonment, and prairies.

Its interesting and useful. Hopefully the link works.

Cool map. I noticed that it didn't show as much prairie as I thought it would and there was quite a bit of new construction around Downtown. like I thought, a lot of it was hit or miss.

Ray Township is way out there. You can board horses in Northville, Northville Township, South Lyon, Lyon Township Milford, Highland, Salem, parts of Romulus, Grosse Ile, HUron township, New Boston, and probably another dozen places that are closer than Ray Township.

South Lyon was for many years the horse capital of the united states according to the almanac. I am not sure what a "horse capital" is, but there were thousands of horses there. Still a lot of barns out there.

I cannot help you with which places have openings, but a few weeks ago Centennial Farm on Grosse Ile was advertising that they had openings.

I suggest that you donto jump fo r the first place that catches your eye. Tak a lot of time and look around, even if you have to rent a while. Grosse Pointe is terrific, but there are a lot of other equally wonderful places in the area, many of which offer the larger properties that you are looking for.

I do nto know th location of the Chrysler facility that you mentioned, otherwise I would give you a list of suggestions. How far are you willing to commute?

I believe that would be in Auburn Hills.
