Pontiac (Ponticrack) : Take Detroit, take away the casinos, take away the big businesses, take away the beautiful downtown, make all the parks scary and into drug dealing havens, take away a police department, and you got Pontiac. The city is a mini Detroit (Residents wise, housing wise, property value wise, and crime wise).[LEFT]

I still dislike this description of Pontiac, it's not the greatest city in the area but it's not "a Mini Detroit" either. And what do you mean by "Residents wise"? Why not just go out and say "there's a lot of minorities" instead, that's what you mean by "residents wise" right?

You have to be a little more specific. There is way too many side streets that run for miles long in Detroit. Try to name a major intersection. I tried to Google it, the closest I found was a "Monterey St" in the Linwood/ Dexter area. Not the greatest area but any stretch of the imagination but there are some pretty big houses over there.

The minorities of Pontiac are all but African American. Hope that's what you meant by posting this comment.

Can you elaborate?

As crazy as it sounds, I actually somewhat believe that...

Nain Rouge - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The little red devil of Detroit. Been around since the founding of the city.

Contrast that with driving over the 696 -75 interchange and seeing Detroit's skyline at night. It's very disheartening to think that if I wanted to live in an active busy city, I'd have to sacrifice the services that I value or just move to another major city altogether.

The leaders of Detroit don't seem to get that. People want basic services and everything else will follow behind. If the leaders of Detroit can't provide that, then they need to get the f**k out of Michigan. As a 20 year old, I don't want my life to be completely made up of suburban sprawl or small towns.

Ugh. Royal Oak is alright, but it's still a suburb. They'd have to demolish all those nice single family homes and build more high-rise apartments for me to be happy with it. But obviously, that'd be an absurd thing to do because there's a major city 3 miles away with plenty of empty land to do that!
If you're only 20 and want to experience big city living, I would honestly recommend moving if you can. Like you said, if you want big city living here you're going to have to deal with crime, blight, lack of services, etc. -- and it's not going to change for the foreseeable future. In fact, it may get worse before it gets better.

I frequently travel to my company's Boston office and know a lot of young professionals who live in Boston proper. There are plenty of nice, walkable neighborhoods and you'll still get to experience the hustle and bustle of city life. South Boston seems to be the trendy place to live these days. If east coast winters are too much for you to bear, Portland, OR is one of the best big cities in America to live in. There's plenty to do in the city and the public transportation is fantastic. You probably wouldn't even need to own a car.

You nailed that argument perfectly. When traveling the country or the world when asked where you are from all things lead to Detroit. Sure you can blurt out Grosse Point, Bloomfield Hills, Rochester or Troy but they will look at you and say where is that? Your reply will be , "it's near Detroit" So even though you think you distance yourself by moving to the suburbs the fact of the matter is you still have to say "Detroit" or nobody will know what you're talking about. So why fight it and live in the Burbs? Come back to the city and lets move forward to rebuild this city and make it the envy of the nation. We have the architecture of the buildings and the homes, we have the geographic location with the river and Canada. I lived here when it was nice, watched it emplode to what it is now and have since purchased a home in the University district. I want to be part of the solution. What ever that may be. It's time to fight back and take this city back. Put the thugs in prison where they belong and move forward to making this the world class city that it once was and shall be as it rises from the ashes, literally. I'm in!

If you're going to be attending the University of Detroit Mercy just cross the street,North of McNichols, and you'll be in one of the most beautiful and safe neighborhoods in the city. Go see for yourself. Take any street, Parkside, Muirland, Fairfield, Birchcrest, etc and drive it all the way up to 7 mile. You will be amazed how beautiful it is.

I am reading and visiting the Detroit forum for the first time. Reason for this is that I had a look at some crime maps at spotcrime.com . I am german and live in germany. I was shocked!!!! by the numbers of shootings in Detroit and i cannot really belive why people dont leave this city. Isn`t it unsafe to walk on the streets??? OMG, you Detroit people must be without any fear, or? I am going to Miami for vacation every year and some people asked me, if i dont feel unsafe in MIAMI. No, not really....
