My labrador Lulu had the same thing. stated with sneezing and a slight runny nose on one side only. Then came the hacking cough, like she had something cought in her throat. Almost like sucking in. I have now found out that this is called reverse sneezing. we have just come back from the vets. Lulu has kennel cough. She is laying in her bed at the moment snoring her head off. This is another thing that has just started. Whats really funny is she is still eating well, playing and you wouldn't really know there was much wrong with her. Well cared for and loved. I take her for long walks every day thats where the trouble starts. Lulu is two and a half years old so everything that moves is a friend to be played with. Other than keeping her away from other dogs. I really dont know how to stop her picking up Kennel cough or any other thing. Poor lulu everytime we returned home in the summer I went right over her coat looking for ticks. flees etc... can you imagine what its going to be like now. Crash helmet, knee protectors, mask. paw protectors, all the other dogs will be laughing at her. wish us luck. sevenoaks UK
As to the cough, our dog started that at age 12. Vet suspected chronic bronchitis. Our old guy is 15 now, and it is worse. They've xrayed him, and say if not bronchitis, it may be early signs of his heart being in trouble. My dog's xrays were inconclusive (one vet in the practice thought the position of his trachea could indicate an enlarged heart, but wasn't sure; the other thought it was how the dog was positioned for the xray). His bloodwork wonderful for his age, heart sounded strong, and he is able to run a lot without any coughing during exercise (we can barely keep up after him, and must run ourselves at times).
We are limited in what we can do for him, given his age and a history of seizures in the past. He is not likely to survive sedation to do things like trachial washes or the like. Anyway, for a "younger" old dog, there are definitely tests you can do to rule out bronchitis, COPD, heart disease, etc. Or it could be worms, or kennel cough.
Good luck to your vet in figuring out what the problem is - you might not know the cause yet, but there is a reason for the coughing and better to find out if it is a minor one or a major one that could be treated.

One of my chiweenies coughs in the morning and whenever she plays hard with her sister. We adopted them from a rescue a couple months ago and the rescue said she had kennel cough. We finished the medicine they gave us, but the cough never went away. I then took her to our regular vet and she gave her an antibiotic and some cough medicine, but this also didn't get rid of it. It's now not much of an issue and only happens when she first wakes up or gets excited, but it bothers me. She's definitly not as hyper as her sister and my chow picks on her because she is weaker than the other dogs.
I'm just glad it appears to just be something she has and can live with because I don't think her sister could go on without her. They're never more than a couple feet away from eachother
My dog does the exact same thing but she only started it recently. She's new to us but she is 3 years old and she's from a home where there were quite alot of dogs. She does it even when she hasn't eaten. I'm worried because I think it might be something serious although I know there's a possibility that it's nothing.
I think that you should investigate the possibility of congestive heart failure. I do not know a lot about Shelties - they are and adorable breed but I have never had the opportunity to have a Sheltie.
Some breeds are more suseptible than others.
CHF is frequently congemital.

I have taken my 8 year old sheltie to the vet and they have x rayed and tested, blah blah blah. The cost is now over $1500 and the result? They don't know. I know. I need another vet.
Her symptons are coughing, drooling, having trouble swallowing and sometimes we hear her tummy growling LOUDLY.
The vet x rayed twice and can't find any masses in her throat. They have taken her blood twice and eliminated many things. The collapsed esopagus sounds reasonable but wouldn't you think an x ray would have found that?
IM SO SCARED!!! my dog maggie is an outside dog. she often comes home with a scar or scab but nothing serious or deep. about 2-3 months ago she threw up blood constanly. i was so scared and now she is hacking coughing and gagging but does not throw up or throws up spit a little bit. and every time she breaths her stomach plums out and she is preagnant

Have a English Pointer Same as all others was in Mt and now in Az same in both places little less here in Az Only once in a while now maybe twice a day. No one thing standing, laying. Has to stand up when he does start. Sure seems like its in the throat. Changed food to a softer food eat better for a while But stays pretty thin. Vet don't know either
