Do dogs act differently with the cold weather? He tends to only go to bathroom off-leash unless I walk him for a long time. I usually just let him off at the beginning of a block and back on when we are approaching an intersection. He's so good that if I stop he stops with me.

Recently, he has been just stopping like he wants to go home and so we go home on leash. Just now though he ran diagonally across the intersection of my block. He has NEVER done that before and I don't understand why. Anyone else notice different behavior due to cold weather?

Well, he is not getting off leash again unless at a park and it looks like he will be back on the Easy-Walk harness along with more training sessions.

Thanks for any help!
Jim

Jim, mine don't want to pee or poop at all in the cold and I've even had one to run back inside and poop on the floor! Boy was I mad. Anyway it is best not to let your pooch off leash at all. Sounds like you have traffic to contend with. In my neighborhood it is not traffic but crazy coyote out all the time.

If it is cold and raining then I have to walk around in front of my house with umbrella to force them to do their thing. They are so domesticated now and want to stay inside with human folk!

One of my Dogs wouldn't go out if it was cold when we lived in the NE.She would run back in.

One thing,if your dog is acting differently,it is always a good thing to monitor it for some other cause.

When it's cold, they run out...do their business and run back in. Not a lot of sniffing, extra play or rough housing with each other.

If it's snowing and cold, they sometimes...double time the above mentioned action.

If it's raining, I may not be able to get them to go out depending on how hard it's raining and if you add thunder to the mix (and yes, it thunder snows here) FORGET ABOUT IT!!!

Mine go out into the backyard to do their business and so they are unleashed. In the front yard and beyond, they have to be leashed. We have traffic (not much) but enough, wild life and other dogs & cats.

If yours continues with "different" behavior, you may want to consult with your vet.

Let us know how it goes...

In the cold, my dog does not like to even go for walks. He runs out and does his business then he barks to be let in about 5 minutes later. He waits on the back step for us to notice, I can see his head peeking up from the back door haha. He hates going for walks, I think the pads of his feet get cold too fast. He has very short fur too. He LOVES the spring and summer.

Mine get way more frisky in the cold weather.
But if your dog isn't built for cold, maybe he just wants in.

1: unless your area has no leash laws he shoudlbe on a leash anyway.

2: take your shoes and socks off...now take yourself for a nice walk along the sidewalk...cold feet? yeah! dogs paws feel the cold just like the bottoms of our feet do...their pasare thicker so its not quite as extreem as what we feel...but its still cold and can be painfull. for dogs with short coats, go out in nothing but a t-shirt...if its too cold for you, its too cold for them, ESPECIALLY for house dogs who are used to a nice climate controle livingspace.

belive me, walk aroun out there half naked for a few mins in the winter you wont be wondering why your dog is in a bit more of a rush to get home lol.

ive got hairless dogs, in the winter forget it there uner blankets will blatantly REFUSE to go out if i dont put their sweaters and such on them ect...they get cold, quickly ust like we do.
and then theres Dozer whos an 85lb mastif mix hes short coated and while not quite as temperature sensitive as the hairless dogs, hes still more than happy to put a jacket on if were going out for more then a few mins.

none of them will stand on the concrete for any amount of time though, they avoid it and if they have to, evendozer will alternate feet...these hard surfeaces retain cold even more and concrete sidewalks can be bitter cold to he point of painfull.

When it gets cool, our dogs get more active and act like puppies more. They bounce all over the place and get so exicited they forget to poop until they have done some running around and bouncing. Then when it gets really cold, they scoot out, poop right by the door and dart back inside.

Bear...13 year old lab.

NEVER a problem with housebreaking.

Ran in the house and went down the hall and pooped.

I was so shocked he did not even get in trouble....but, I will be watching him.
