katie, I just found Seabee in a search I did last night. I kind of like that. Looked it up, too and found they have an important purpose. "A member of one of the United States Navy construction battalions for building naval shore facilities in combat zones" The word comes from "CB" which is an abbreviation for Construction Battalion. It has an easy, solid sound to it. What d'yall think? There would be the sea-theme connection.
Of course, then there are the easy going, fun names like "surfer" (Moondoggie)

(I never saw the old John Wayne movie, but my hubby probably did )

Call "cookie" in the ring?? I'd be nuts. You're so right -- every dog in the vicinity would come running.

Pupppy went to the vet today to get his well-puppy checkup and rabies vaccination. He'll be a bit sleepy this afternoon. Maybe he'll dream up a name for us. (The vet's assistant suggested "Treasure" to go with the sea captain's treasure chest theme).

I lean in that direction too. Real names make more sense to me and feel more comfortable.

So far he's been "pipsqueak", "baby-pooh" or "babykins" "pumpkin" "pup-pup" "sweetie" or "sweetie pie" "nutball" ...none of which are becoming to either his noble breeding or his (hopefully promissing) future. He'd cringe if he knew what he's being called.

I was toying with the name "Jonah", considered among seagoing folk as "bad luck" (my boating hubby told me), but only because of what happened to the Biblical Jonah - swallowed by a whale. Somewhat fitting as a name, though, since it teaches the lesson that if you don't obey the master - like, if you don't come when called but run in the other direciton, bad things can happen to you because most likely there's a whale of a problem awaiting you down that way. The jury is still out on a final selection.

Best thing we can teach our dogs is to come when called and drop on signal, no matter what.
